The Gators are happy to let DuBois take his time.
DuBois’ contributions to UF’s SEC and NCAA titles turned a decision he effectively made months ago into a cause for celebration among coaches and teammates.
When he recently told JC Deacon the final verdict, Dubois said the Gators coach replied, “If you don’t come back, we’re gonna have a problem.”
DuBois, who announced his decision Wednesday on social media, will provide a veteran leader as a fifth-year senior and clutch performer to help Florida build on a program-changing season.
The native of Windermere is familiar with the daily grind and can help set a course for younger players. DuBois plans to collaborate with fellow veterans Quentin Debove, a rising senior who shined last fall but fell into a slump, and Matthew Kress who ascended to the starting lineup as a redshirt freshman.
“We can make them better players quicker than they would be able to without a good leader: ‘This is how we do things at Florida,'” DuBois told the Sentinel. “‘This is how we go through our practice routine.’ We try to take care of all the small, little things so we can be prepared for when we get on the big stage.”
Once there, DuBois has shown a unique ability to handle tournament pressure.
DuBois rose from obscurity to win the 2022 SEC individual title. On May 11, his 15-foot winning par putt capped UF’s 3-1 win during the SEC match-play final against the two-time defending conference champion Vanderbilt, the nation’s top-ranked team.
During the NCAA championships, DuBois was unbeaten during match-play victories against Virginia, Florida State and Georgia Tech.
“I’ll never forget that putt,” Deacon said of the SEC clincher. “Then to 3-0 in the match play at nationals … he’s just clutch. He’s money.”
DuBois, who recently turned 22, aims to cash in by postponing his professional dream.
During the extra season at UF, he will continue to develop his game under Deacon and ace assistant Dudley Hart, a UF Hall of Famer and former PGA Tour winner integral to the Gators’ newfound success. DuBois hope to produce some higher finishes — a tie for ninth was his best in 2022-23 — and work his way up the PGA Tour University rankings.
Introduced during the fall of 2020, PGA Tour U. provides professional playing opportunities to top collegians with at least four years’ experience. Florida’s Fred Biondi, who also was the NCAA’s individual national champion, finished No. 2 in the rankings to Texas Tech’s Ludvig Aberg. Aberg earned full PGA Tour status while Biondi and the next three in the rankings received the same on the Korn Ferry Tour.
PGA Tour U.’s top 20, including UF’s Ricky Castillo (No. 9) and Yuxin Lin (No. 10), earned conditional membership on Korn Ferry Tour and are exempt on PGA Tour Canada, where players ranked 11-20 are also fully exempt.
DuBois, who was unranked, hopes to capitalize.
“I looked at the pros and the cons and said, ‘Coming back for a fifth year … could probably only make me a better player, give me more playing time, more experience,'” he said. “With PGA Tour U, it makes [the decision] pretty easy. Going into next year, just play a little better and hopefully I get my ranking up there and see where that takes me.”
For now, DuBois will play several amateur events, beginning with the Northeast Amateur Invitational June 21-24 at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rhode Island. Later this summer he will return to Gainesville for a year he hopes is the best yet.
“I love Florida,” DuBois said. “I don’t feel like I need to leave. I don’t want to leave. But I also want to go play professional golf.
“So I get the hang around those guys for another year, which is not a bad gig.”

A few months after Backswing Ventures raised its first venture fund in 2020, Managing Partner Kyle Asman moved from New Jersey to Windermere in search of nicer weather, lower taxes and a better business climate.
Money from the first fund was invested into 10 companies, none in Florida. However, Asman told Orlando Inno he is raising a second fund that’s likely to fund startups in metro Orlando’s $14 billion defense sector.
Why this story matters: Venture capital helps startups develop their products, hire employees and grow their businesses. This not only creates high-wage jobs, but also can lead to the creation of innovative solutions that aid other businesses.
The $15 million seed fund, called Backswing Ventures Fund II LP, will invest in 10-12 companies, with a typical check size between $500,000 and $1 million, Asman said. In addition, he has $12 million in commitments for the fund, he said.
In addition to companies focused on defense technology, Asman is looking for specific traits in potential investments. He wants companies with at least $1 million in revenue valued at less than $20 million.
Typically, venture investors seek returns that are 10 times what they put into a company. That’s because a general rule of thumb is nine out of 10 startups fail, so investors want their few successful investments to make big returns.
Asman, whose background is in investment banking, has a different outlook. Backswing Ventures is interested in companies with strong revenue that can generate returns of 2.5 to 5 times the amount invested. "We focus on revenue a lot, and other venture funds focus on growth."
Asman is finding these companies in the region, as he said he is in talks with a company in metro Orlando and one on the Space Coast.
Defense contracts are big business in Central Florida, thanks to Orlando’s $6 billion defense-focused simulation sector, the aerospace launch hub at Cape Canaveral and the presences of mammoth contractors like Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE: LMT) and L3Harris Technologies Inc. (NYSE: LHX), which employ a combined 17,500 workers in the region.
Central Florida received 28% of the $49.3 billion spent by the U.S. Department of Defense in Florida in 2020, according to the most recent data available from Enterprise Florida.
In the U.S., startup investment activity hit a record high in 2021 before slowing in 2022. However, metro Orlando companies collectively raised $106 million in the fourth quarter, up 1,081% from $9 million from Q3 and practically unchanged from $107 million raised in Q4 2021.
Local venture capitalists previously told Orlando Inno venture funds would face a tougher time raising money this year, though many funds still had money left over from 2021 to invest.

A Windermere High School student was struck by a car while walking home from school. The incident happened right in the school parking lot, officials said, and the incident was captured on video.
Paul Walker was in the pickup line to pick up his two children when his dash cam video caught the crash. In the video, you can see a Jeep Cherokee speed up and then strike a 14-year-old crossing the street. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said the 17-year-old driver of the car didn’t see the student crossing.
"I got out of my car to try to help," said Walker. "He got up and was like most people he was in shock. Thankfully, the people that were there advised him to lie straight down and wait for an ambulance."
Walker and his children live close enough to school where they could walk home, but instead, he drops them off every day. He says there are not enough safe places for students to cross.
"They only started a week ago today and there have already been three fender benders in the [parking lot] and now this very unfortunate incident," said Walker.
The school parking lot has 10 lanes of traffic in the student parking lot followed by another five lanes where cars come in and out of campus. Students who cut across the parking lot would have to cross all 15 lanes to reach the sidewalk.
"It’s very busy," said Senior Ally Charlton. "A lot of cars coming in and out of the parking lot over here and it’s like no one really looks because you don’t expect a kid to be walking over there."
Charlton used to walk home before getting a car. She tries to stay alert every time she’s in the parking lot.
"There was a car accident out here just yesterday so they’re not really trying to keep us safe necessarily. It’s just really busy and no one’s really directing anything so you’re just out here by yourself," said Charlton.
Walker suggested the school add an elevated crosswalk with flashing yellow lights to slow down drivers. Charlton suggests opening up exits on the other side of the school where there is less traffic. Windermere High School sent out a message to all parents about the crash. They are asking parents to remind their children about pedestrian safety.
"Please remind them to always use sidewalks when one is available, cross the road at marked crosswalks and walk in groups when possible," said Principal Andrew Leftakis.
FOX 35 News reached out to Orange County Public Schools about this. They say they will be reinforcing pedestrian safety as well as reevaluating traffic on campus. FHP said the 14-year-old was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and the teen driver was not issued a ticket.

She caught this video of a car street racing near her home.
Neighbors said it sounds like an accident waiting to happen.
Last month, Thomas detailed her frustrations in this Facebook post:
She took pictures of these cars she caught speeding around Reams Rd. in hopes they would stop, but she said that did not help.
At this point, she has not been able to clearly read the vehicle license plates.

In hopes to get results for her community, Thomas made complaints to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, but she said her efforts have not been enough.
“They’re aware that it’s happening. They’re aware it’s illegal activity, but they’re not willing to do anything about it unless it’s multiple complaint,” Thomas said.
News 6 reporter Treasure Roberts reached out to OCSO to ask how they plan to stop this. The sheriff’s office provided the following statement Friday morning:
Another Windermere resident, who asked not to be named, said he also complained to OCSO.
“It doesn’t feel like it’s being treated as seriously as it could be,” he said.
The resident said it is annoying and disruptive, but most of all, it is dangerous, especially since it is a highly populated area with a school and dozens of shops nearby.
“All it takes is one accident, one ‘I’m sorry’ for someone’s life to be taken or someone to be tragically hurt,” he said.
The residents are asking that deputies patrol the area more often. They also suggested deputies go undercover to catch the people responsible.

A proposed penny sales tax hike in Orange County may fund a path for cyclists, pedestrians and golf cart drivers throughout the town of Windermere.
It is one of 10 municipalities with a draft list of projects to pursue if Orange County’s proposed penny sales tax hike for transportation needs is approved by voters in November. The top three bike/pedestrian projects prioritized by Windermere all are focused on the creation of the Windermere Ward Trail.
The trail entails creating sections of multimodal paths that connect with existing sidewalks and crosswalks. The end goal is to build a network of paths that let people access local government facilities, recreational spots, businesses and more by walking, biking or even driving a golf cart, Town Manager Robert Smith said during a Ward Trail Design Workshop meeting in April.
The city is prioritizing the second, third and fourth phases of the trail as potential projects to fund through the proposed sales tax hike, which is expected to generate $600 million per year during a 20-year period. The three phases will create 2.5 miles of trails and cost an estimated $2.59 million, according to the county’s transportation initiative draft report.
The town is focused on designing the $1 million first phase, which already has $760,000 in dedicated federal funds. When the four phases are complete, the trail would stretch intermittently north-south along Main Street from 3rd Avenue to 12th Avenue and continuously run east-west along Conway Windermere Road from Main Street to Apopka Vineland Road.
Building multi-use paths and trails is never a bad idea, as they’ve repeatedly proven popular with metro Orlando residents, Bike/Walk Central Florida Board Chair Lisa Portelli told Orlando Business Journal. “We have data that when we build trails, they will come.”
The build-out of a multimodal trail throughout Windermere is one example of the $1.6 billion in bike, pedestrian and technology improvement projects the Orange County Transportation Initiative plans to fund over the course of 20 years.
Changes to the region’s bike and pedestrian infrastructure are particularly important given the region’s dismal safety performance in that area. In fact, nonprofit Smart Growth America last year ranked Orlando as the most dangerous metro for pedestrians, with 740 pedestrian deaths from 2010-2019. Meanwhile, Florida ranks as the deadliest state for cyclists, per National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.
Beyond bike, sidewalks and technology, plans tied to the tax collection include doubling the size of public bus system Lynx's fleet and expansion of SunRail to seven days a week along with routes to Orlando International Airport and toward Apopka.
In the coming weeks, OBJ will take a deeper dive into the specifics of the safety projects, as well as other transportation improvements the proposed sales tax would fund.
