ORLANDO, Fla. — As Idalia approaches Central Florida and is expected to strengthen, communities ask residents to be prepared.

Here is a list of the sandbag locations being offered this week ahead of possible storm impacts.
Orange County Public Works is making sandbags available to residents preparing for potential impacts from Tropical Storm Idalia. Five sandbag locations will open to residents on Monday at noon.
The sites will operate from noon to 7 p.m. on Monday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, pending severe weather.
The Parks and Recreation Division and the Public Works Department will have bags and sand available on a self-serve basis. Residents will need to bring their own shovel or spade to fill their bags. Orange County will provide 10 unfilled sandbags and direct residents to the sand pile.
Individuals with special needs who need sandbag assistance should contact Orange County 311 beginning Monday at noon.

Winter Park
Winter Park residents can pick up sandbags on Monday from 2 to 6 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Rollins Softball Field parking lot located at 452 Harper St.
There is a limit of eight bags per resident or business owner within the city limits.
You are asked to bring proof of residency, either a driver’s license, valid ID or utility bill statement.
The bags are available as a fill-it-yourself model with the city providing shovels, bags and sand on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are physically unable to fill your sandbags, city staff will be available to assist those in need.

Osceola County
Osceola County residents may fill and make sandbags at Osceola Heritage Park, located at 1211 Shakerag Road, on Monday from noon to 7 p.m. *UPDATE* The sandbag distribution will continue on Tuesday. Officials said 21,000 bags were distributed on Monday.
Supplies will be provided, including bags and sand, in a joint effort between the county, St. Cloud and Kissimmee. Residents are allowed 25 sandbags per household and must bring their own shovel or filling tool. Supplies are limited, and sandbags will be available for filling on a first-come, first-served basis.

Seminole County
Altamonte Springs
There will be two pickup locations in Altamonte Springs on Monday while supplies last.
Those locations will be in Eastmonte Park, 830 Magnolia Drive, and Westmonte Recreation Center, 624 Bills Lane.
Both will be open from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Each household is limited to 15 bags. While the location does not provide shovels, park rangers will be there from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. to help.

Oviedo
The City of Oviedo announced it would open a sandbag location at the Public Works Facility starting Monday, Aug. 28.
Officials recommend entering and exiting the location off of Evans because the entrance and exit leading to Lockwood will be closed for operations.
Staff will assist residents in using a new sandbag-filling machine.
The location will open at 7 a.m.
Sanford
The City of Sanford will offer sandbags for residents to prepare for the storm’s possible impacts.
Starting Sunday, there will be empty bags and sand at 800 W. Fulton Street from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
People will need to bring their own shovels and gloves.
Longwood
Longwood will have sandbags available at Candyland Sports Complex on Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The bags are self-serve and there is a maximum of 10 bags per family.
Winter Springs
The City of Winter Springs and Seminole County will continue to offer sandbags at Central Winds Park on 1000 Central Winds Drive through Tuesday.
The self-serving sandbag operations will be available from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. or while supplies last.
Each household is limited to 15 bags.
Residents should bring their own shovels and gloves.

Volusia County
Daytona Beach
The city of Daytona Beach will offer sandbags to residents from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Monday.
Sandbags can be filled at Bethune Point Park, 11 Bellevue Avenue.
Officials said there is no charge for sandbags. However, there is a 10-bag limit per vehicle.
If demand and conditions warrant, sandbag operations will be extended to Tuesday.
DeLand
The city of DeLand will open a sandbag location ahead of possible storm impacts.
The site will be in the parking lot south of Melching Field on 601 South Woodland Boulevard, at the corner of East Hubbard Avenue and South Woodland Boulevard.
It will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday and hours to be determined on Tuesday. *UPDATE* The hours will continue at the same location from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday.
Bring a shovel and ID for proof of residency.
There will be a limit of 10 bags per residence.
Port Orange
Port Orange will open up its sandbag distribution site on Monday for residents.
The site is located in the field next to the REC Center at 4655 City Center Circle, Port Orange. It will be open from 10:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday. The site will also be open from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, depending on the weather.
This is a self-service site. You must bring your identification and a shovel. Staff will provide bags for use. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per person.
The site is in the City Center Complex between Dunlawton Avenue and Herbert Street on the northwest side of City Hall.
Deltona
The city of Deltona is opening sandbag locations ahead of potential impacts from Tropical Storm Idalia.
Two sandbag locations will be open Monday from 8 a.m to 6 p.m.
This is a self-service operation where bags will be provided to our residents, but you should bring a shovel and someone to help with the bagging process.

Sandbags are available at seven Lake County locations beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday. Residents must bring their own shovels and are limited to 10 bags of sand per household. Residents should bring their own shovels and are responsible for filling their own bags. Sandbags will only be offered before the storm, and no sandbags will be dispensed once storm conditions begin.

3-way intersection at Gaymar Drive has no lights or stop signs
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The Clarcona Ocoee Road and Gaymar Drive intersection was a major topic of discussion during Tuesday’s Orange County Community Traffic Safety Team meeting.
Orange County traffic engineers will be conducting a traffic study to evaluate if any improvements can be made to make the area safer for drivers. They’ll be looking into things like lighting, signs and additional pavement markings.

“We’ve gotten some complaints about speeding issues on Clarcona Ocoee Road and I know there’s been some crashes at the next intersection of Ingram,” said Lt. Kim Montes, with the Florida Highway Patrol.
This comes after a deadly crash last week that left two women and three children dead. The FHP said the latest wreck was the second deadly crash at the intersection of Clarcona Ocoee Road and Gaymar Drive so far this year.
In 2020, there were two crashes at that same intersection. In 2019, there were five wrecks.
Montes said an investigation is underway to determine if speed was a factor in both of the recent deadly crashes. She said drivers need to be vigilant in those types of three-way intersections with no stop signs or traffic lights.
“There are hundreds of these types of turns in Orange County and if you are making a left turn, one of the most dangerous maneuvers, you have to yield to oncoming traffic,” Montes said.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is increasing traffic enforcement in the area. Local traffic safety organizations have volunteered to begin community outreach and educate residents about safely navigating the intersection.
The traffic study is expected to be completed by May. FHP officials say the investigation into the cause of the latest deadly crash should be completed in the next few months.

Florida-based entrepreneur Trisha Bailey wants to transform an old horse ranch in Orange County’s Clarcona neighborhood into a new assisted living community.
Baileys Real Estate LLP, a company tied to Bailey, just submitted a Land Use Plan application in Orange County seeking to rezone about 50 acres on the northwest corner of Gilliam Road and Clarcona Ocoee Road. The application states Bailey wants to develop 18 independent living villas, a 100-bed assisted living facility and a 12,320-square-foot clubhouse for residents.
The project, called Bailey’s Community, is planned to rise on the former Highlife Farms equestrian complex, which Bailey bought out of bankruptcy last year for $2.5 million from previous owners, Kenneth and Joan Sims.
The couple filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy last year in the United State Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Norfolk Division, and were ordered to sell and convey the land through an authorized trustee by the end of 2019. Baileys Real Estate LLP was the buyer.
Bailey founded several eponymous companies that specialize in the medical industry throughout Florida, including her Bailey’s Medical Supplies company and Bailey’s Pharmacy family-owned businesses.
Momtaz Barq of Terra Max Engineering is the engineer on the project.
Bailey was not immediately available to comment.
Her proposed assisted living facility is near Orange County’s growing cities to the west, like Ocoee and Apopka.
Ocoee’s city’s population has nearly tripled since the initial City Hall was built in the mid-1990s from 17,000 residents to more than 50,000, according to the American Community Survey.
Iowa developer Wendell Corey also filed plans earlier this year for a 96-bed assisted living facility in Ocoee dedicated to memory care. Cottages at Ocoee would rise on 6.9 acres at 1900 E. Silver Star Rd.
Homebuilders active in Ocoee include Mattamy Homes, which is developing its 303-lot Preserve at Crown Point gated community, and Lennar Homes, which continues to expand its Arden Park North subdivision around Lake Sims.
Orlando-based Chau Medical Group is also looking to build an assisted living facility in Central Florida.
Founder Dr. Son Chau plans to break ground soon on his planned mixed-use development in Winter Springs that will include 6,400 square feet of new retail space, a three-story medical office building and a 114-bed assisted living facility.

In the summer of 2013, Clarcona Elementary School moved from its former location on Damon Road to its current location at 8723 Hackney Prairie Road.
At first, the school site was to be a temporary home for Clarcona Elementary, but after two years passed, Principal Robert Strenth discussed with the Parent-Teacher Association and School Advisory Council the desire to stay at the site and how to make the school better reflect the neighborhood.
“When it started to look like we’d be able to stay rather than going back, that’s where the push came to, ‘Let’s make this school our school,’” Strenth said.
The SAC and the PTA began to solicit ideas for a new name to better reflect the neighborhood. Most parents said that they supported a name change, and Prairie Lake, Hackney Prairie and Northwest all were proposed names.
The parents selected Prairie Lake, which is the name of a nearby park.
“It’s something our students are familiar with, not only at school but also in the neighborhood,” Strenth said.
The name change became official when the Orange County School Board approved it in January.
Students also voted on a new mascot. Out of the Panthers, Pioneers and Owls, they overwhelmingly selected the Panthers. The school’s colors are now purple, black and gold.
The new location offers some advantages, Strenth said. More students are able to walk to school, and the school has been able to offer more after-school activities for students and their families. The school now has nearly 15 different clubs, including a new chess club.
“It’s important to me and to my teachers and my staff to have that identification with the school, that there’s more here than just, ‘Come into the classroom, do my classwork and leave,’” Strenth said.
