The City of Altamonte Springs in Florida has launched an autonomous shuttle service pilot which aims to extend mobility options and access to goods and services for residents, visitors and businesses.
The State of Florida’s Department of Transportation chose the city to serve as a testbed for AV shuttles and provide data on implementing the technology in other municipalities.
In collaboration with autonomous mobility specialist Beep, the first phase of the CraneRIDES service launched this week, testing two electric autonomous vehicle (AV) shuttles on a nearly 2.5-kilometre route that connects key points across the city.
“This is a multi-phase project that will run over three years, and each year we will expand the route,” Frank Martz, City Manager of Altamonte Springs, told Cities Today.
“It’s a class three automation, but there’s an attendant on board who can interrupt the automated feature if they need to.
“They’re also on board to serve as a kind of concierge for those who get on the vehicle and welcome them on board, telling them where they’re going and explain the technology to them so they become more comfortable.”
Passengers can download the RideBeep app to track the shuttle in real-time.
Land use
The vehicles will operate seven days a week, with four stops where users can hop on and off free of charge.
“We’ve located the trial in places where it connects with a lot of pieces of land use, and I think that’s one of the most important components of this – is that transit doesn’t stand alone, and nor does land use,” said Martz.
“Both have to be integrated and they have to reflect one another.”
Florida’s Department of Transportation awarded a service development grant to cover half of the US$2.4 million needed for the first three years of operation, with the city covering the rest.
“The state has a vested interest in developing multiple modes of transportation that can efficiently move people. Autonomous vehicles can be part of the solution,” said Florida Department of Transportation District 5 secretary John Tyler.
“With the hundreds of people moving to Florida every day, building new roads cannot be our only focus. Our partnership with the City of Altamonte Springs creates a scalable, replicable model that other Florida communities can now evaluate through hands-on experience because of our CraneRides AV partnership with the city.”

Free-to-ride autonomous vehicles will soon be rolling into Altamonte Springs with the city’s new CraneRIDES project.
Offering alternative transit and solutions for the area’s changing economic and urban landscape, CraneRIDES will launch its first trips July 24.
CraneRIDES is a multi-year AV shuttle network project, with an environmentally friendly and proactive initiative to extend mobility for residents, visitors and businesses, according to the city.
This three-year phased project will provide connectivity to Altamonte Mall, the AMC theater, the Renaissance Center and the city’s Cranes Roost Park, traveling at speeds up to 15 mph.
The shuttle is scheduled to run Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then start up again from 5 to 9 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, the morning to afternoon time is the same, but the evening schedule will be from 5 to 10 p.m.
By 2025, the shuttle's speed will pick up to 30 mph and it will start taking passengers to AdventHealth hospital, Center Pointe complex and the SunRail station east of the city, according to the city officials.
Lake Nona-based Beep will provide the technology and shuttles to make the project possible. Each bus will hold up to 11 riders.
Altamonte Springs’ new autonomous bus service follows Beep’s 2019 shuttle project in Lake Nona, called Move Nona. More recently, downtown Orlando announced plans to offer a similar free autonomous bus service that will travel to parts of Parramore and Creative Village, and link to Lynx’s downtown bus station. The State of Florida’s Department of Transportation is paying half of the $2.4 million project. They chose the city to serve as a testbed for the AV shuttle project. In return, the city of Altamonte Springs will provide data on ridership numbers as part of the program.

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The “Largest Nativity Set in the World” can be found at a home in Central Florida — along with an assortment of other strange surprises.
Drivers passing through Altamonte Springs along East Altamonte Drive have likely passed by this home without even noticing.
However, those who turn onto Jackson Street will find the nativity set posted front-and-center along the roadway.
While the nativity scene is gated off on private property, a sign posted in front claims that it’s 2 feet taller than “the largest nativity set currently recorded in the world, located in Mexico.”
The owners, Joe and Morgan Voke, told News 6 they purchased the set, which belonged to the Holy Land Experience before the theme park property was bought by AdventHealth.
“My brother-in-law who hates statues sent me a Facebook Marketplace link to the ‘Largest Nativity Set in the World.’ He sent it as a joke (for) next Christmas. That was like three or four years ago...” Morgan Voke said. “We got it from a guy who used to work for Holy Land for used, so we got it indirectly.”
The Vokes added that they love “unusual stuff,” which is why they decided to buy the nativity set.
Aside from that, they also managed to get their hands on an olive tree, a statue of John the Baptist baptizing Jesus, and a model of the stone Jesus was believed to have prayed at in the Garden of Gethsemane before his death.
The Vokes’ home is also highlighted by a line of marble statues erected along the roadway out front.
Drivers turning from Jackson Street onto Amanda Street can see them all lined up as they drive past, highlighted by the cavalcade of Christmas decorations that the Vokes put up.
There’s also a stone carving of Jesus’ face, which was made to look as though it watches you as you go by.

Even the large fountain found in the couple’s yard — installed entirely by themselves — was originally owned by the Holy Land Experience.
“The (Holy Land) property was being bulldozed, so all of this was just going to go into a landfill,” Joe Voke said. “We saved it from the landfill and kept its life going.”
On the flip side of the property at the intersection of Jackson Street and Depugh Street, passersby can spot a sign that reads, “JESUS IS WATCHING (And The Cameras Are Too...).”
According to the Vokes, a nearby “trap house” had frequent issues, including a shooting, and a piece of artwork on their property had been graffitied.
After painting over it, they chose to put up a surveillance camera system, along with the posted warning. Since then, they said they haven’t experienced as many issues with vandalism.
But perhaps the neatest part of the Vokes’ homestead is the empty lot out back.
While unassuming, Joe Voke said they’re planning to build a lazy river attraction akin to the lazy river found at the Four Seasons Resort at Walt Disney World.
The attraction is expected to stretch across the property, with animal statues — a score from an estate sale — being placed around the river.
“We’re waiting on stuff that takes a long time with the county,” Joe Voke said. “There’s a utility easement we have to vacate, and then we have to join parcels. It took two years just to get a surveyor to survey the property and put on the correct verbiage for the county.”
The Vokes explained they’d like to extend the lazy river to the nearby community, though there could be challenges.
“It’ll be for everybody. We have to figure out how to legally do that so it’s not some sort of liability burden on us...” Joe Voke said. “It’s going to have to be some kind of membership thing or something like that because otherwise you just have a bunch of people on your property, and you can’t have someone falling or something goofy like that.”
While the property is decked out in plenty of statuesque artwork and holiday decorations, that’s not all there is to it. The couple also helps organize a local Christmas parade, which is scheduled for Dec. 23 at 3 p.m. It will start near the couple’s home at Jackson and Amanda streets and then travel down New Amanda Street.

This cutting-edge AV shuttle pilot provides convenient and sustainable transport options to connect people to major activity centers. Residents and visitors who live, work and play in Altamonte Springs can hop on to experience the future of this emerging technology. Though Altamonte Springs is at regional crossroads where millions drive through each year, residents and visitors will now have alternatives to get around easily while saving time by avoiding congested roads or having to park multiple times. To onboard this new pilot project, the FDOT awarded a service development grant which provides 50% funding of the $2.4 million for the first three years of operation.

Beep will provide the technology and shuttles to make this possible. Beep has extensive experience safely deploying and testing autonomous shuttles in communities from Florida to California.
Within three years, the 100% electric AV shuttle network in Altamonte Springs will provide residents and visitors first and last-mile connectivity from Uptown Altamonte, the City's main retail business center, to the Altamonte Springs SunRail Station – Central Florida's commuter rail service.

Futures phases of the Altamonte Springs project will further expand and enhance passenger services with the introduction of these new vehicles and extend connectivity to the AdventHealth Altamonte campus, Altamonte Springs SunRail Station and CenterPointe, a planned 55-acre mixed-use development with a hotel, retail establishments and residential living.

When Altamonte Springs’ CraneRIDES — a pair of fare-free autonomous buses — take off on the first trips July 24, the vehicles will carry passengers on short and slow journeys around one of the most densely packed commercial and residential spots in Central Florida.
It will circle the Altamonte Mall, the AMC theater, the Renaissance Center and the city’s Cranes Roost Park at speeds of up to 15 mph on its 1.5-mile route every day.
But by 2025, a fleet of six driverless buses will zip by at speeds as fast as 30 mph and also connect passengers with the AdventHealth hospital, Center Pointe complex and the SunRail station east of the city, according to officials.
“With all these apartments around here, I can see people taking it to work or to go shopping,” Mayor Pat Bates said Monday as she joined other officials at Cranes Roost Park to launch the new bus service.
“And it’s quiet and has no exhaust,” Bates said standing next to one of the two 15-foot-long blue-and-yellow vehicles with large glass windows and automatic doors that slide open.
Beep, based in Lake Nona, will provide and operate the autonomous buses, each holding up to 11 riders on black-and-white seats. Inside, passengers can watch two small video screens during their journeys.
The first three years of the shuttle service will cost about $2.4 million, with half of the amount coming from a Florida Department of Transportation grant. In return, Altamonte Springs will provide ridership numbers and other data to the state agency as part of the pilot program.
“With hundreds of people moving to Florida every day, building new roads cannot be our only focus” for transportation, said Loreen Bobo, an administrator with the Florida Department of Transportation. “The state has a vested interest in the development of multiple modes of transportation that can efficiently move people. And autonomous vehicles are part of that solution.”
Altamonte Springs’ autonomous shuttle bus service follows Beep launching a similar network of autonomous shuttles called Move Nona in 2019 in southeast Orlando. There, the company operates eight shuttles crisscrossing the Lake Nona community across five routes.
The company also runs autonomous vehicles in Jacksonville; Cary, N.C.; Port St. Lucie; Yellowstone, Wyoming; and Zoo Miami in Miami-Dade County.
In May, the city of Orlando announced its plans to offer a similar, free autonomous bus service that will circle portions of the Parramore neighborhood, Creative Village and the downtown Lynx bus station. That $500,000 test program with Lynx is planned to start in late August and run through April 2024. Beep also will provide and operate the two autonomous buses for that pilot.
“We have got to change the way we move people, and we do that, as an example with this shuttle,” said Joe Moye, Beep’s chief executive officer. “A full shuttle, taking a route across [Altamonte Springs], takes six and half cars off the roadway. … So it will have a compounding environmental impact.”
Altamonte Springs’ pilot program also will enable other communities to develop their own similar autonomous shuttle systems, City Manager Frank Martz said.
“This will create a model for others to come see, learn from and evaluate how autonomous mobility might serve their community, too,” Martz said. “At first, it will be small; just from Cranes Roost, over to the Altamonte Mall. But it will eventually expand. … And it’s all designed to make our lives better for our residents and safer for them, too.”
