The Three Kings arrive in Central Florida this weekend

On Saturday, children will be looking for camel tracks, bunches of eaten hay, and gifts left by The Three Kings. Additionally this weekend, multiple Three Kings events are being held for the public in Orange and Osceola counties.
January 6th is the Feast of Epiphany otherwise known as Three Kings Day, which is celebrated commonly in Latin communities and recognizes the 12th day after the birth of Jesus Christ when he was visited by three wise men who were struck with wonder by the baby Jesus.
Now, tradition holds the Three Kings visit children everywhere on camelback and leave presents behind. In turn, families leave hay or other food for the camels to keep them going on their long journey.
Orange County
Orange Commissioner Mayra Uribe is the daughter of Columbian and Argentinian parents. She recalls childhood memories of waiting for camels to arrive the night before Three Kings Day. Now, Uribe not only celebrates with her two children, but she also hosts her own event hoping to bring the tradition to all children — the fourth annual Three Kings celebration at 10 a.m. at St. John Vianney Catholic Church on Orange Blossom Trail.
"My parents were immigrants and the Santa Claus was not as much of a big deal in their countries, respectively, as it is here, but Three Kings were. And so I just want to keep that tradition," she said. "We want to have a time, where kids get to have lunch together. They get to pick a toy, get their face painted, and play some games. But it's really about unifying family and community together."
Uribe said that the Orlando Magic donated a large amount of basketballs to the event — basketballs, as well as soccer and footballs, are among the most requested gifts. They'll also have headphones and baby dolls available.
Uribe also said that while the event is largely celebrated by Latin culture, Three Kings Day is for all children.
"I invite everybody. I think it's great when we have everyone come, and you have a diversity that kids get to see and learn about," she said. “This is a moment to stop. This is not a technology event. This is a simple event where we talk. Where we share. Where you open your toy because you don't have to save it and wait for Christmas. It's Three Kings Day.”
The Kings will also stop by for pictures.

Osceola County
John Newstreet is prepping to lay dirt and camel tracks for his 5-year-old girl, while he also plans the 19th annual celebration of Three Kings Day, Sunday at Old Town in Kissimmee.
"My five-year-old is a believer. It's nice to relive childhood through her eyes," said Newstreet the president and CEO of the Osceola Chamber.
Newstreet said that local businesses donated 3,000 toys for children at this year's event. Hotdogs and popcorn will be available for lunch. Kids will have a chance to win a raffle event for bikes and tablets. Also, the Kings will be visiting the event and taking pictures with kids.
The event is free for all to join, thanks to generous private businesses coming together to honor the day for kids.
"There's usually some sort of exchange for events like this. Like 'we want this if we're giving this' but not for Three Kings Day," he said.
According to the U.S. Census, 57% of the Osceola population is Hispanic, which is why donating time, money, and effort toward the Latin cultural event is important to those involved in the celebration, Newstreet said.
"These kids, they're still excited, and they're spending this special day with us. That's pretty powerful to see," he said.
Newstreet was raised Roman Catholic and celebrated Christmas as a kid. His wife's background is Venezuelan meaning his five-year-old daughter previously found reindeer tracks on Christmas and is now expecting to find camel tracks this weekend.
"Christmas is still a big day, but my daughter is very much looking forward to Three Kings Day," he said.

ORLANDO, FLA., DEC 1, 2023 – Established in 1949, USTA Florida celebrates 75 years as an organization in 2024. USTA Florida is thrilled to announce details on how the Florida tennis community can celebrate the building blocks of the sport in the state, the progress that has been made up until today, and the great strides the community can make in the future to continue to build upon the Section’s impressive legacy.
“The 75th anniversary celebration is a time for us all to get together to commemorate the great history of this organization,” said Phil Girardi, USTA Florida Board President. “This isn’t just a celebration about our past, but looking forward to the next 75 years.”
USTA Florida recognizes that there are many locations where tennis has thrived over the past 75 years. To honor those locations and the countless number of them around the state, the organization has compiled a list of iconic tennis parks, locations, and venues across the state that have been crucial in growing Florida tennis. “As a section, we need to remember who we are, where we came from, and honor our past,” Girardi added.
These locations are viewable virtually or visitors can traverse the state and stop by each location along the Florida Tennis Trail, gathering insight into the sport’s rich influence on the state at each stop.
If a location is missing on the list that has impacted the tennis community in a positive way, those can be submitted for addition to the Trail. By filling out this form, all submissions have a chance to be added to the historic tennis trail map.
To add to the year of celebration, USTA Florida will be holding in-person events to honor a few of the Florida Tennis Trail locations that have been vital to the success of grassroots tennis in the state. More details on those events will come in 2024.
To bring the party to everyone across the state, providers and organizers can receive and utilize USTA Florida’s 75th Anniversary Event Kit.
The Event Kit includes: Mesh Fence Banner, Event Towel, Stickers, Voucher for USTA Florida Swag, Florida Tennis Trail poster, USTA Florida Partner information and special offers. Virtual tools such as Celebration Event Ideas, Save the Date Templates, Press Release Templates, Marketing Best Practices, Celebration Spotify Playlist, and more.

USTA Florida is also hosting four separate major in-person celebrations across the state and throughout the year. Those events will be hosted in Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, and Tallahassee with the dates to come in 2024.

To celebrate Dia de los Muertos, Fort Lauderdale is hosting its 14th annual Florida Day of the Dead Celebration … and trust me, I feel it in my bones that it’s going to be a fun time.
Renée Victor (as Abuelita, voice): “Dia de los Muertos has begun!”
That’s right! And the city of Fort Lauderdale is putting on its 14th Florida Day of the Dead Celebration.
Jim Hammond: “The Florida Day of the Dead Celebration is a downtown, family-friendly festival that takes over corners of Fort Lauderdale and celebrates life through this traditional festival.”
The Mexican tradition is meant to celebrate the dead by dressing up and placing their photos and favorite food on an ofrenda, or offering place.
But, in the words of Abuelita from “Coco”…
Renée Victor (as Abuelita, voice): “Dia de los Muertos is the one night of the year our ancestors can come visit us. We put their photos on the ofrenda so their spirits can cross over.”
Jim Hammond: “There’s so many parts to the festival that people want to experience again and again. The traditional folklorico dancers, traditions that go back hundred of years, the Indigenous music groups.”
And, of course, their fan favorite: the skeleton processional.
Jim Hammond: “People come out, get dressed up as skeletons and celebrate with their own giant skeletons.”
As for how many bare-bone pals take the streets during the parade…
Jim Hammond: “We bring dozens of puppets and skeletons to the procession, but it’s really the audience, it’s the participants who bring hundreds and hundreds of skeletons to the procession.”
But the party isn’t over when the parade stops.
Jim Hammond: “We’re going to have over a dozen food trucks, over 50 craft vendors, music, entertainment and so much more, all the way up until 10 o clock at night. Each of us has someone in our world who we’ve lost and we want to remember. This is a chance for you to come out and celebrate their life in the most playful way. As we say at with Florida Day of the Dead, it’s a memory for the dead but a party for the living.”
The big bash takes place this Saturday starting at 3 p.m.

WHAT’S AT STAKE
Each team will be making its first appearance in the Celebration Bowl. The Rattlers enter the bowl with a 10-game win streak after defeating Prairie View A&M 35-14 on Dec. 2 for their first Southwestern Athletic Conference title. Howard has a two-game winning streak and will be looking to extend the dominance of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, which has a 6-1 advantage over teams from the SWAC in the game.
KEY MATCHUP
Florida A&M quarterback Jeremy Moussa vs. Howard pass defense. Moussa passed for 2,604 yards and 19 touchdowns and was named SWAC Offensive Player of the Year. The Bison ranked third in the nation in passing efficiency defense and led the nation with their average of 129.5 passing yards allowed per game. Moussa passed and ran for touchdowns in the SWAC championship game.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Howard: Safety Kenny Gallop was named the MEAC defensive player of the year. Gallop had 58 tackles, including four for losses, with two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
Florida A&M: Running backs Terrell Jennings, Kelvin Dean Jr. and Jacquez Yant combined to rush for 19 touchdowns. Each of the three backs had at least 70 carries to give the Rattlers a balanced ground game. Jennings led the team with 605 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging 6.0 yards per carry.

Florida A&M, a former MEAC member, joined the SWAC in 2021 and won its first SWAC championship this season. ... The Rattlers beat the Bison 39-7 in 2019 in the last meeting between the teams, who were then MEAC rivals. ... North Carolina Central beat previously undefeated Jackson State, coached by Deion Sanders, 41-34 in last year’s Celebration Bowl, giving the MEAC a 6-1 record against SWAC teams in the game. ...
