Discover Effortless Aging with Hormone Therapy for Women

There's real substance to the notion that every woman is different. No two person's attitudes, bodies, or goals in life are ever exactly the same. But if there's one thing that every person shares, it's that our bodies change as we get older. That's especially true for females over the age of 50. One day you wake up, roll out of bed, and attack the day with vigor and positivity.

The next day, it seems like your emotions are out of control. Despite dieting and healthy life choices, your weight won't go down. It seems like you're having to deal with uncomfortable hot flashes every other hour of the day. Life can be hard after 50, especially when it seems like your body is plotting against you.

Service Areas

But the truth is, these changes are a completely normal part of the aging process for women. As you might be aware, this change is called menopause, and according to the NIH, more than one million women go through it every year. This change in life marks the end of your period. During this time, your hormones begin to deplete, causing a range of symptoms that can be difficult to deal with without professional help. Some of the most common symptoms of menopause include:

  • Hot Flashes
  • Vaginal Dryness
  • Low Libido or Sexual Desire
  • Mood Swings
  • Lack of Focus
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Chronic Tiredness
  • Increased Body Weight

Trying to juggle and cope with the symptoms of hormone deficiency can be rough for women and their partners because many of them are linked to nutrition, stress, and lack of exercise.

How Does Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women Work?

At NV Medical Orlando, our HRT treatments for women include the use of pellets, which are about the size of a tic-tac and contain hormones like estrogen and testosterone. These pellets are implanted subcutaneously to supply your body with the hormones it needs. Each pellet contains a tiny number of bioidentical hormones that are released steadily into your bloodstream for up to five months.

Unlike other sexual health centers, every HRT treatment provided by our women's sexual health clinic is tailored to our patients. While natural hormone replacement therapy is effective for many women, every patient is different. That's why it's important that you speak with a board-certified doctor, like Gina Kirkpatrick, before starting any HRT treatment to make sure it's right for you.

Your HRT Timeline

As we mentioned earlier, no two women will have the same hormone levels or HRT therapy needs. As such, every woman's timeline for menopause relief will be different. Generally, however, a standard HRT timeline may look like this:

week 1

Around week one, many women notice that they experience fewer hot flashes than normal. Some women notice these improvements only a few days after their first treatment.

week 2

After about two to three weeks of HRT for women in Baldwin Park, FL, many women notice that they have less irritability, anxiety, and fewer mood swings. During this phase, hot flashes should continue diminishing, and sleep may improve. Other benefits of HRT, like increased libido and more energy, are also expected during this phase.

week 3

Starting around weeks three to four, many HRT patients will notice drastic improvements in menopausal symptoms.

week 4

Around weeks five and six, it's common for women to notice physical differences like healthier skin, less hair loss, and even weight loss. With time, these improvements become even more pronounced.

Additional Services for Optimal Female Health

At NV Medical Orlando, we don't only treat our patients for sexual health and wellness. Because Dr. Gina Kirkpatrick is a fellowship-trained urologist, our clinic has the capacity to treat all matters related to sexual health and wellness, including certain urologic conditions.

Rejuvenation

Vaginal Rejuvenation

Have you started to notice that things “down under” are different than they were years ago? Are you experiencing disconcerting symptoms such as:

  • Burning
  • Irritation After Sex
  • Dryness
  • Urinary Incontinence
  • Unfulfilling Intercourse
  • Vaginal Laxity (Lack of Tightness)
  • Diminished Lubrication During Intercourse

If you've noticed any of the above symptoms, you may be dealing with vaginal or pelvic floor laxity. For women dealing with these issues, vaginal rejuvenation often answers their problems. Vaginal rejuvenation is an umbrella term that covers several vaginal corrective procedures. These procedures can correct problems that occur after giving birth or during menopause.

Traditionally, these conditions have been treated with invasive surgeries and with supplements like vaginal estrogen or hyaluronic acid. However, modern treatment options like laser vaginal rejuvenation are growing in popularity and can help women avoid the pitfalls of surgery.

In fact, study centers around the world are using monopolar radiofrequency for vaginal laxity in premenopausal women. Studies show that treatment is safe and helps improve vaginal laxity and other sexual dysfunctions. Additionally, anecdotal evidence shows that patients have less urine leakage when coughing, laughing, sneezing, and exercising.

If you're unsatisfied with the appearance of your vagina or have noticed increased looseness or diminished lubrication, don't lose hope. Vaginal rejuvenation, HRT for women in Baldwin Park, FL, or a combo of the two may be right for you.

Dryness

Vaginal Dryness

The primary cause of vaginal atrophy or vaginal dryness is the reduction of estrogen. Typically, women lose estrogen during and after menopause. Childbirth and hysterectomy can also be causes that reduce estrogen production. To help women restore natural levels of estrogen, thereby treating vaginal dryness, NV Medical Orlando offers three types of therapies:

Vaginal Therapy

Estrogen cream is applied intravaginally at night to improve vaginal blood flow, lubrication, and elasticity. Alternatively, women can choose s Hyaluronic Acid Vaginal Suppository, which provides hormone-free relief from vaginal dryness. This treatment is best for women who cannot undergo hormone replacement therapy.

Minimally Invasive Vaginal Therapy

Viveve Radiofrequency Technology, which uses cryogen-cooled radio frequencies to heat and cool vaginal tissue, is designed to improve:

  • Blood Flow
  • Vaginal Lubrication
  • Vaginal Laxity
  • Stress Urinary Incontinence

This popular treatment is performed discreetly, is painless, and usually takes less than an hour to complete.

Systemic Therapy

HRT for women in Baldwin Park, FL, can be administered as oral pills, creams, pellets, or as injections under the skin. The specific type of hormones, their delivery mechanisms, and dosage levels are determined on a patient-by-patient basis after a detailed history, physical exam, and laboratory study.

Low Libido in Women

If you're a woman who finds herself lacking sexual desire or the act of sexual intercourse, you're not alone. In fact, research from 1999 shows that as much as 22% of women in the U.S. report low sex drive. Though this issue is often underreported, its causes and the available treatments are well-known.

Causes of low libido in women include:

Surgery

Hysterectomies often result in a drastic drop of testosterone and estrogen in a woman's body. This drop in hormones has been linked to low libido.

Medications

Some medicines that are used to treat depression and anxiety, specifically SSRIs that inhibit serotonin, have been demonstrated to reduce sexual arousal.

Hormones

Estrogen affects blood flow to vaginal and genital tissues. Reducing estrogen, which can occur during and after menopause, childbirth or surgical menopause created secondary to a hysterectomy can result in reduced vaginal blood flow and lubrication.

Overall Health

Studies on post-menopausal women have demonstrated that patients in poor health report lower sexual desire. In fact, symptoms like chronic pain, fatigue, and mood swings caused by chronic illnesses all contribute to decreased female libido.

Though low libido and the effects of unbalanced hormones can be concerning, treatment is available at NV Medical Orlando. First, a thorough physical exam and health history will be conducted to help our experts develop an optimal treatment plan for you. During your evaluation, you may be asked to complete a questionnaire that helps us assess your symptoms further. That way, we can craft an appropriate treatment regimen to address your symptoms and concerns.

The type of treatment recommended depends on your identified needs and may include hormone replacement therapy for women, vaginal treatments, oral medications, sexual therapies, or additional treatment regimens.

From a young age, Baldwin Park resident John Gernert knew he wanted to pursue a career in health care.

Gernert’s great-grandmother was a midwife in the mountains of extreme western North Carolina in a rural, Appalachian town called Hanging Dog.

His great-grandmother worked with almost every member of the small community, and Gernert remembers hearing fascinating tales of patients and their stories of healing.

“Everybody, when they learned I was her great-grandchild, they always would have to tell me some kind of medical story, because she was the closest thing to there being a doctor in that part of the state,” he says. “The stories of her helping people who had been bitten by a snake, or children that were born, or any type of emergencies in this small little area, I got to hear first-hand.”

Now, Gernert is following in her footsteps with the opening of his practice, Orlando Pain Centers of Excellence.

“Potentially, if I do my job right, my patients’ lives are so much better,” Gernert says. “What normally happens is you have someone that is at a high-functioning place in their life where they’re doing great. Then, they have an injury (or) a surgery, and all of a sudden, they have terrible pain. Not only does chronic, severe pain lead to depression — you lose your friends, you lose your ability to work, you lose your ability to get out and do things — but everything starts spiraling down. Some of these patients I see have been going down for years of their life. When they come in here and I offer them the possibilities of my practice, for the first time in years I’ve shown them something other than opioids. An injection that is going to give meaningful reversal of the downward spiral that their life has been. I can instantly see a change in the patients I see come in my office. By the time they leave, they’re like a new person. It’s the most extraordinary and rewarding moment. I get a blessing, the office gets a blessing, the families get a blessing and the patient gets a blessing.”

TRAINING

Originally from Murphy, North Carolina, and growing up in east Tennessee, Gernert attended the University of Tennessee.

He completed his post-graduate education at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He then completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of South Florida.

Following his anesthesiology residency, he elected to further specialize in the field of interventional pain management.

Gernert was accepted into USF’s pain-management fellowship program. There, he completed an additional one year of intensive training in the art of alleviating patients’ acute and chronic pain.

That’s when he knew one day he wanted to have his own office working on interventional pain treatments.

Gernert moved to Orlando to take a job with Orlando Regional Medical Center.

He was one of the five interventional pain physicians that treated chronic and acute pain patients at the hospital and with affiliate M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

He left the hospital to pursue his dream in interventional pain management full-time.

“I enjoyed the aspect of getting to talk to people, and I didn’t really get to do that when I was just putting them to sleep,” he says. “I’m good with a needle, and I enjoy using that God-given talent to help cure people with their pain.”

NEW PRACTICE

Gernert opened Orlando Pain Centers of Excellence in spring 2022. There, Gernert employs interventional pain management, which uses minimally invasive, needle-based therapies to improve a patient’s quality of life.

Gernert and his team use a multi-faceted treatment approach to prevent the downward cycle often seen with patients afflicted with pain. The office uses numerous, therapeutic options but specializes in neuromodulation.

The practice treats myriad pain types, including spinal, back, neck, peripheral neuropathy, complex regional pain, PTSD, musculoskeletal, nerve and muscle.

Gernert specializes in spinal cord stimulation therapy, as well as spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion stimulators.

“It’s going to change the world of pain management,” he says of dorsal root ganglion stimulation. “DRG stimulation uses equipment, which is implanted in your spine under your skin, to send mild, electrical impulses to the area of a DRG in your spine. This stimulation can make the DRG create more ‘red lights,’ which blocks pain signals from that area traveling to your brain. It’s an amazing piece of technology, but it’s brand new.”

In addition, Gernert is one of the only doctors in the area who offers in-office kyphoplasty, the surgical filling of an injured or collapsed vertebra. This procedure restores original shape and configuration and relieves pain from spinal compression.

BALDWIN BLESSING

Orlando Pain Centers of Excellence is accepting new patients. Gernert says he wants patients to know when they’re desperate they should seek help.

“Let me at least try to help you,” he says. “I’ll try every time. Every single patient. I don’t care if they have insurance or not. If they are desperate and they come to me for help, I’m going to try to do my best.”

Gernert has lived in Baldwin Park since 2004 with his wife, Kimberley, a real-estate specialist with Keller Williams in Winter Park. When they’re not working, the couple can be seen fishing on Lake Baldwin with their three sons or walking their dog, Rocky.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Some Baldwin Park residents say they were forced to leave their homes, with Christmas right around the corner, after their town home building was flooded Wednesday.

Residents say they believe the flood was caused by roofers breaking a pipe connected to a fire sprinkler. Now, they say they’re unsure who will foot the bill for the damage.

What You Need To Know

Kevin Wall said water rushed down his walls and dripped from his fixtures Wednesday. The source, he and his neighbors believe, was caused a broken fire sprinkler pipe that was damaged by roofers working on town home next door.

“We had water pouring out of the light fixture, pouring out of the electrical plug,” said Wall.

Wall says both his son and mother face health issues that could be exasperated by mold. On Friday, the entire home was filled with generator-powered fans to try to air out the home.

Wall said he was advised by his electrician to keep the power off out of fear it could pose a safety risk.

Still, Wall considers himself lucky. He says his neighbor next door lost practically everything as water rushed through his side of the town home.

But Wall says he has no idea who will be paying for the damage they’ve all faced.

He says the HOA hired the roofers they believe were responsible for the broken pipe. Residents say they have been given a runaround on whose insurance will have to pay.

In the meantime, Wall says he does not know where the money will come from to fix what could amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“We don’t want to spend the next year of our life fighting and dealing with, ‘Is it this insurance company? Is it that insurance company? Whose responsibility? Whose fault?’” he said.

In the meantime, none of the residents living in the town home building have been able to return home. Many have left to stay with family over Christmas, while others are now living in hotels.

Wall says he’s thankful for local businesses that have assisted his family. A local Baldwin Park dog store has taken in his pets, and he says his electrician dropped everything to come ensure the home was safe.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Four families in Baldwin Park are starting the new year homeless.

Bobby Slaven is a community representative elected to speak on behalf of that section of Baldwin Park. Workers with Advanced Roofing cut through a water line, flooding four townhouses just before Christmas.

"Still kind of just in disbelief," Slaven said about the families losing their homes unexpectedly. "People are just kind of left wondering, ‘What can we do?’ What their rights are, and how can they best protect their homes?"

It’s been two weeks since the County slapped "condemned" signs on the four homes. The homeowners have been trying to get in contact with the homeowners' association ever since. They say they want a sit-down meeting but haven’t heard back about that.

FOX 35 asked for the same and hasn’t heard back either.

We did get hold of the president and founder of Advanced Roofing, Rob Kornahrens.

"I've been in it roofing 55 years. I've never seen anything like this before," he told FOX 35 about the mishap that led to the flooding.

Kornahrens says Advanced Roofing has done work in Baldwin Park before. However, he says the workers encountered unforeseen conditions on this project.

"It's very unfortunate to see people displaced before the holidays. You know, we feel for them," said Kornahrens.

Florida’s new building code states pipes installed under the roof need a minimum clearance of one and a half inches.

Advanced Roofing says the pipe its workers cut through didn’t meet that standard.

"You start thinking, what could we done differently or whatever? And we we've passed that," said Kornahrens. "It's no longer an unforeseen condition because now we know it's there. So we don't want to go and have this happen again. You know, lessons learned."

So far, the company isn’t denying fault, but they haven’t accepted it either. They say they’re still investigating.

But the roofing company is still under contract for work on several other homes, and they don’t plan on this happening again.

So, how does the company plan to avoid another flood?

"We're talking to people that do scanning underground for pipes, like when you got to dig for utilities. We're talking to people that can scan and possibly detect the water in the fire sprinkler, and then we mark it out. We're looking at different options," answered Kornahrens.

They also want the homeowners to let them inside the houses to check things out, but they have run into some resistance.

"Those homeowners aren't comfortable with advanced roofing doing the jobs," said Slavens. "We're still looking at all of our options. Figuring out what our best to move forward is for the community."

Right now, Advanced Roofing says its work is on pause while they talk with architects, the building department, and fire marshals.

Hotwire Communications installing fiber throughout neighborhood

ORLANDO, Fla. – When neighbors begin to see color-coded flags on their lawns, it’s a sign that construction will soon be underway.

In Baldwin Park, a company called Hotwire Communications is installing fiber street by street.

The process requires crews to dig in certain areas to lay cables.

Eugenia Montiel has been a homeowner in Baldwin Park for about 20 years.

Property upkeep is a priority for the HOA community, but over the past few weeks, neighbors said their spick-and-span lawns have been ruined.

[EXCLUSIVE: Become a News 6 Insider (it’s FREE) | PINIT! Share your photos]

The fiber company hasn’t made it to Montiel’s block yet, but she is dreading the day they do.

“You were hired to do a job, OK, that’s fine — do it. But if you’re doing a job, you need to leave the area in the same condition you found it,” Montiel said.

Some neighbors have complained chicken bones were left near the work sites.

“You can tell that some of them eat lunch instead of taking the trash away. They just leave it in the area, and that’s not sanitization,” Montiel said.

A representative for Hotwire Communications told News 6 reporter Treasure Roberts the company understands construction can be very disruptive but said this is short-term pain for long-term gain.

They added that residents don’t have to foot the bill to fix their lawns. The representative said additional crews will fix any damage within 30 days of the initial service.

“Thirty days, I believe, is a long time. We need to know why 30 days because you don’t want to live in a house where your front is a mess or the grass is ripped,” Montiel said.

She worries the HOA will penalize residents if it’s not fixed sooner, although what happened to the lawn was out of their control.

“If they don’t fix it, then the homeowners are the ones who (are going to) have to take the consequences and take the costs of taking the property back to the way they found it,” Montiel said.

News 6 reporter Treasure Roberts called the HOA to ask whether residents will be fined if the lawns aren’t fixed by a certain time. News 6 is awaiting a response.
