What is Male Andropause?
A decrease in hormones is not associated only with females. Males also experience a decrease in testosterone with age, sometimes in their 30s or 40s. This decrease refers to andropause. It is basically male ‘menopause’ but unlike menopause, it does not cause a male to lose his fertility. Male testosterone levels may continue to decrease steadily.
Symptoms of andropause in males can include:
- Low testosterone
- Low sex drive
- Decrease in stamina
- Depression
- Loss of muscle mass
- Mood swings
- Weight gain
- Hot flashes
- Difficulties with erection (erectile dysfunction)
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Decreased libido
- Decreased testicle size
Testosterone is the primary hormonal factor that causes deep voice, body hair, muscle mass, regulating sex derive (libido), production of sperm and various other hormonal changes. Once males observe a decrease in testosterone, all the effects of low testosterone start to appear. Men may also begin to experience low self-esteem.
