Understanding the Importance of Testosterone in Your Body

head-bottom

When people hear the word "testosterone," they often associate it with overly aggressive or macho men. However, testosterone really has little impact on a man's masculinity, at least from a social standpoint. Rather, testosterone plays a much more important role in male development, from puberty to the end of life.

As the primary androgen, testosterone helps men develop typical male characteristics and is vital for the production of sperm. The pituitary gland and hypothalamus in the body control testosterone, and it helps men develop and maintain various functions such as:

What Causes Low Testosterone?

head-bottom

As men age, they may experience lower levels of testosterone, also known as low T. This natural decline in testosterone can also be caused by drug abuse, obesity, prescribed medications, or testicle injuries. When testosterone levels decrease, it can affect the body's balance of testosterone and estrogen, leading to an increase in abdominal fat and higher levels of estrogen. This hormonal imbalance can lead to a variety of issues that, when left untreated, can affect your quality of life in several ways.

The most common low testosterone signs in males include the following:

  • Erectile Dysfunction or ED
  • Increased Amounts of Body Fat
  • Lack of Concentration
  • More Irritability
  • Low Libido
  • Low Sperm Count
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Decrease in Muscle Mass
  • Lack of Motivation

If one or more of those symptoms are happening in your life right now, it could be because your body has a lack of testosterone. The only way to find out for certain is to have your testosterone levels tested at a qualified Sexual Wellness and Holistic Clinic, such as NV Medical Williamsburg. If testing shows that you have low T, the next step in your recovery could be TRT in Williamsburg, FL.

The Risks of Living Life with Low Testosterone

head-bottom

Some men may think to themselves, "I don't have the time or patience to undergo TRT in Williamsburg, FL." While TRT treatments are quick, easy, and require no recovery time, we at NV Medical Williamsburg understand that this type of therapy is not for everyone. Some men choose to rough it through this stage in their life, despite available solutions. While that is certainly an option, if you're considering this route, you should know that more is at risk than low libido and lack of motivation.

As frustrating as those symptoms can be, living with low testosterone often results in more serious issues that risk the health of your vital organs. If you're on the fence about bringing your testosterone levels back within normal range, keep these health risks in mind.

Diabetes

Diabetes

For those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes, it's possible that low testosterone levels could be a factor. Research has shown that men with low testosterone are more likely to develop diabetes as they age, and those with diabetes are also more likely to have low testosterone. Additionally, men with low T may struggle with insulin resistance. While testosterone replacement therapy won't cure diabetes, studies have suggested that men with healthy testosterone levels tend to have better blood sugar levels and a lower risk of obesity.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

If a doctor has informed you that you have high blood pressure, you may be curious about its root cause. Could it be due to aging? Is it hereditary? Or is there another factor at play? Research has shown that men who have low levels of testosterone are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases. When testosterone levels are low, red blood cell production is hindered, which can speed up the accumulation of plaque in your arteries. Over time, this plaque buildup can result in severe issues such as heart attacks and strokes.

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Many men face the challenge of excess body fat as they age, which can be discouraging when you're trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Despite eating well and exercising regularly, stubborn fat around the waistline can be difficult to get rid of. However, it's important to note that low testosterone levels may be the underlying cause. Studies have shown a correlation between low T and obesity, as testosterone helps regulate metabolism by controlling insulin, glucose, and fat. The good news is that undergoing TRT in combination with proper diet and exercise can lead to weight loss and improved blood glucose and low-density cholesterol levels.

Anemia

Anemia

Anemia occurs when the body lacks or has dysfunctional red blood cells, resulting in reduced oxygen supply to organs. Men with low testosterone levels are at a higher risk of anemia since testosterone plays a role in healthy red blood cell production. A study conducted in 2009 revealed that older men with low T have five times more chances of being anemic compared to men with normal testosterone levels. Although testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is not a cure for anemia, it can help in the production of more red blood cells, which may prevent anemia.

TRT in Williamsburg, FL: A Reliable Solution to Low Testosterone

head-bottom

To fully appreciate the advantages of testosterone replacement therapy from NV Medical Williamsburg, it's crucial to grasp its mechanism. Testosterone was first synthesized in a laboratory in 1935 and has been prescribed to counteract low testosterone levels in clinical settings ever since. Over the last few decades, it has emerged as one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the US.

TRT works by restoring a healthy testosterone level in men who suffer from low T. Essentially, TRT is similar to insulin for people who have diabetes. The body lacks sufficient production of an essential hormone, and so requires an exogenous source to replace it - testosterone in this case. Although most men begin TRT after the age of 50, more men in their 30s and 40s are having their testosterone levels tested at wellness clinics like NV Medical Williamsburg. If you're experiencing symptoms like ED but think you're too young for testosterone replacement therapy, it's worth having your T levels checked by a doctor.

Our TRT Process

As the name implies, TRT replaces the testosterone that your body is missing, so it can function as it should. Unlike some TRT clinics, however, our doctors and practitioners take a personalized, comprehensive approach to testosterone replacement therapy.

If you are experiencing symptoms that may indicate low testosterone levels, it is important to undergo a thorough evaluation, including a medical history and physical examination, as well as laboratory studies. After discussing the potential risks and benefits of testosterone therapy with your healthcare provider, a decision can be made about whether to proceed with treatment.

There are several methods for administering testosterone, such as a gel that is applied to the skin, injections, pellets that are placed under the skin, and a new oral pill that has recently become available. Once treatment begins, regular monitoring of your lab results is essential to ensure that the therapy is effective and to make any necessary adjustments based on additional factors. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and are interested in exploring testosterone therapy, please reach out to NV Medical Williamsburg to schedule a private and confidential consultation with our Board-Certified Urologist.

Hurricane Ian began dumping rain on eastern Virginia on Friday, causing the cancellations of a number of events in the Williamsburg area over the next few days.

The National Weather Service said rain accumulation over the next few days could approach 5 inches. During the same period, wind gusts could range from 25 to 40 mph.

“Pockets of localized rain could be heavier than 3-5 inches,” Alec Butler of the weather service said Friday. Following a first wave Friday and very early Saturday morning, there will be “a lull and partly cloudy skies Saturday afternoon,” he said. “The second wave will come Sunday and Sunday night, but with lighter rain than the first portion of the storm.”

Ian struck Florida as a Category 4 hurricane Wednesday afternoon, plowed through the state and was expected to hit land again near Charleston, South Carolina, on Friday before moving northwest. The effects of the wide-reaching storm began hitting Hampton Roads early Friday.

A flood watch is in effect through this morning for James City County and points east along the James River, along with a coastal flood warning through 8 a.m.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency Wednesday. By Friday, events around the Williamsburg area were canceled, Busch Gardens closed for the day and Williamsburg-James City County Schools decided to release students early. Weekend school activities are canceled.

Other cancellations and postponements include:

James City County

James City County Parks & Recreation has canceled its Freedom Stories planned for today from 3-6 p.m. at Freedom Park. The event will not be rescheduled at this time.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg closed Friday but plans to reopen at 10 a.m. today.

Jamestown-Scotland Ferry

The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry may have intermittent service disruptions, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Higher tide levels, sustained winds of up to 35 mph and stronger gusts could take place through Sunday. “High water caused by higher than normal tide levels prevents the loading ramps on the loading ramps on the docks from safely being raised and lowered onto the ferry boats,” VDOT said.

Motorists should plan for potential delays and are encouraged to call the ferry hotline at 1-800-VA-FERRY (1-800-823-3779) or visit 511virginia.org for updated information to determine if an alternate route is needed.

The 8th annual Virginia Fire Chiefs Foundation Golf Tournament at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club was rescheduled to Oct. 28. For more information, visit vfca.us/2022_VFCF_Golf_Tournaments.

The Yorktown Wine Festival scheduled for this weekend has been postponed to Nov. 13. Tickets purchased for the event will be honored on the rescheduled date. More information available at villageevents.org/yorktown-wine-festival/.

Most park facilities are closed this weekend. However, the parking lots located at the McReynolds Athletic Complex (412 Sports Way) and Chisman Creek Park (1314 Wolf Trap Road) are open for the parking of vehicles due to potential for coastal flooding.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Avelo Airlines announced Tuesday that it will begin offering non-stop flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando from the Newport News-Williamsburg Airport (PHF) in October.

Service to Orlando will start at 11:45 a.m. on October 19, and service to Fort Lauderdale will start at 9 a.m. on October 20, according to a statement by Avelo Airlines.

Prices to fly to Orlando on the airline will start at $29, and customers can make reservations at AveloAir.com.

Avelo Airlines head of marketing, Travis Christ, said this is the only non-stop service to Florida on the peninsula.

"We’re super excited to be at Newport News," Christ said. "We’ve had our eyes on this city for quite a while. It fits the model that has been very successful for Avelo: to find airports that have been underserved, either the fares are high or they don’t have many flights, and oftentimes the people have to go for long drives.”

This is another option for travelers in Hampton Roads, according to the airport’s executive director Mike Giardino.

“Choice is what it’s all about,” he said. “We have such high demand on the Peninsula for air service. We know people drive, and that’s OK, but we’re here to bring service to the Peninsula where it belongs.”

Newport News Mayor McKinley Price noted that there is a lot of competition in the area between airports in Norfolk, Richmond, and D.C. He said this new service makes it easier for people on the peninsula to catch a flight.

“Because when you think of trying to leave from here going to Norfolk, you never know what’s going to happen in the tunnel," he said. "My sister, it took her six hours to get to DC this weekend, you just never know with the traffic.”

Price said the flights would be affordable and convenient for Hampton Roads locals.

“We are thrilled that Avelo Airlines is adding Newport News to the list of destinations they serve," Price said. "We also look forward to welcoming tourists to our great city and helping them discover new and unique Newport News experiences,” Price said.

Avelo said that Orlando is the theme park capital of the world, and Fort Lauderdale boasts sunny weather and plentiful beaches.

According to visitwilliamsburg.com, the airport is currently served by American Airlines and flies to over 150 destinations.

Travelers at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport will soon be able to experience the Sunshine State for as low as $29 for a one-way flight.

Avelo Airlines, a Houston-based discount carrier, said it will begin offering flights to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this fall. The airline plans to start offering Orlando service Oct. 19 and Fort Lauderdale Oct. 20.

“We are thrilled that Avelo Airlines is adding Newport News to the list of destinations they serve,” Newport News Mayor McKinley Price said in a Tuesday announcement. In addition to offering affordable options for Hampton Roads residents, he said the flights will help showcase the convenience of the Peninsula’s airport.

Introductory one-way flights will begin at $29 for Orlando and $49 for Fort Lauderdale. After the inaugural Oct. 19 flight, both Orlando and Fort Lauderdale flights will run Thursdays and Sundays from Oct. 20 to Nov. 9 and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays starting Nov. 10.

Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said airline leaders chose Newport News for its central location between Richmond and South Hampton Roads. He said the airline usually enters markets where there is no similar service available.

“We’re really excited to bring some new options to people who live in the region,” Levy said.

Levy said the strategy is similar to one he used while at Allegiant Air, which also serves smaller destinations with fewer direct flights. Avelo sells several add-ons to supplement ticket revenue, including fees for both carry-on and checked baggage, extra legroom and food service.

If the two initial routes are successful, Levy said airline leaders will explore adding flights to other Florida locations like Tampa Bay, West Palm Beach, Fort Myers and Sarasota.

Peninsula passengers will enjoy the new services because it means they won’t have to trek across the bridges and tunnels to neighboring airports, where traffic delays can make travel days even longer, said Michael Giardino, Newport News/Williamsburg airport executive director.

“These flights fulfill what we already know is high demand for great air service in our region,” Giardino said.

The airport had lost business while competing with the Norfolk and Richmond airports because of COVID-19 issues and airline consolidations, Giardino told a panel last year. Norfolk attracted low-cost carrier Breeze Airways in June 2021 that now offers flights to Florida destinations and other locations like Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Charleston, South Carolina.

Still, the Peninsula airport landed a $15 million expansion project in September from Newport News aerospace company Aery Aviation, which will create a new 60,000-square-foot hangar and engineering facility.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - A line of heavy storms rocked parts of Williamsburg Sunday.

Trees were uprooted, several homes saw damage, and thousands were left without power.

There were also two homes on Jan Rae Circle that were severely damaged. Ray Kemp was outside with a family member when they saw the storms develop.

“He says 'Watch out!' and I look up and see this branch come down,” Kemp said.

Kemp said they then saw an entire tree crash straight through the kitchen, cutting the mobile home in half.

Several people and pets were home at the time. No injuries were reported, but Kemp said it was still devastating.

“I literally looked at it and said, 'That’s all my childhood memories, gone'." Kemp said.

A few houses down another house was hit by a fallen tree. Mohamed Lasri said his wife and three children were home when a large tree fell through the roof.

“I don’t care about the home, my kids are safe, that’s important to me,” Lasri said.

Crews worked Monday to restore power to the neighborhood and clean up debris. Kemp said they're trying to treat this setback as a new beginning.

"I’m trying to be positive about it,” Kemp said.
