Understanding the Importance of Testosterone in Your Body

head-bottom

When people hear the word "testosterone," they often associate it with overly aggressive or macho men. However, testosterone really has little impact on a man's masculinity, at least from a social standpoint. Rather, testosterone plays a much more important role in male development, from puberty to the end of life.

As the primary androgen, testosterone helps men develop typical male characteristics and is vital for the production of sperm. The pituitary gland and hypothalamus in the body control testosterone, and it helps men develop and maintain various functions such as:

What Causes Low Testosterone?

head-bottom

As men age, they may experience lower levels of testosterone, also known as low T. This natural decline in testosterone can also be caused by drug abuse, obesity, prescribed medications, or testicle injuries. When testosterone levels decrease, it can affect the body's balance of testosterone and estrogen, leading to an increase in abdominal fat and higher levels of estrogen. This hormonal imbalance can lead to a variety of issues that, when left untreated, can affect your quality of life in several ways.

The most common low testosterone signs in males include the following:

  • Erectile Dysfunction or ED
  • Increased Amounts of Body Fat
  • Lack of Concentration
  • More Irritability
  • Low Libido
  • Low Sperm Count
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Decrease in Muscle Mass
  • Lack of Motivation

If one or more of those symptoms are happening in your life right now, it could be because your body has a lack of testosterone. The only way to find out for certain is to have your testosterone levels tested at a qualified Sexual Wellness and Holistic Clinic, such as NV Medical Williamsburg. If testing shows that you have low T, the next step in your recovery could be TRT in Williamsburg, FL.

The Risks of Living Life with Low Testosterone

head-bottom

Some men may think to themselves, "I don't have the time or patience to undergo TRT in Williamsburg, FL." While TRT treatments are quick, easy, and require no recovery time, we at NV Medical Williamsburg understand that this type of therapy is not for everyone. Some men choose to rough it through this stage in their life, despite available solutions. While that is certainly an option, if you're considering this route, you should know that more is at risk than low libido and lack of motivation.

As frustrating as those symptoms can be, living with low testosterone often results in more serious issues that risk the health of your vital organs. If you're on the fence about bringing your testosterone levels back within normal range, keep these health risks in mind.

Diabetes

Diabetes

For those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes, it's possible that low testosterone levels could be a factor. Research has shown that men with low testosterone are more likely to develop diabetes as they age, and those with diabetes are also more likely to have low testosterone. Additionally, men with low T may struggle with insulin resistance. While testosterone replacement therapy won't cure diabetes, studies have suggested that men with healthy testosterone levels tend to have better blood sugar levels and a lower risk of obesity.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

If a doctor has informed you that you have high blood pressure, you may be curious about its root cause. Could it be due to aging? Is it hereditary? Or is there another factor at play? Research has shown that men who have low levels of testosterone are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases. When testosterone levels are low, red blood cell production is hindered, which can speed up the accumulation of plaque in your arteries. Over time, this plaque buildup can result in severe issues such as heart attacks and strokes.

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Many men face the challenge of excess body fat as they age, which can be discouraging when you're trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Despite eating well and exercising regularly, stubborn fat around the waistline can be difficult to get rid of. However, it's important to note that low testosterone levels may be the underlying cause. Studies have shown a correlation between low T and obesity, as testosterone helps regulate metabolism by controlling insulin, glucose, and fat. The good news is that undergoing TRT in combination with proper diet and exercise can lead to weight loss and improved blood glucose and low-density cholesterol levels.

Anemia

Anemia

Anemia occurs when the body lacks or has dysfunctional red blood cells, resulting in reduced oxygen supply to organs. Men with low testosterone levels are at a higher risk of anemia since testosterone plays a role in healthy red blood cell production. A study conducted in 2009 revealed that older men with low T have five times more chances of being anemic compared to men with normal testosterone levels. Although testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is not a cure for anemia, it can help in the production of more red blood cells, which may prevent anemia.

TRT in Williamsburg, FL: A Reliable Solution to Low Testosterone

head-bottom

To fully appreciate the advantages of testosterone replacement therapy from NV Medical Williamsburg, it's crucial to grasp its mechanism. Testosterone was first synthesized in a laboratory in 1935 and has been prescribed to counteract low testosterone levels in clinical settings ever since. Over the last few decades, it has emerged as one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the US.

TRT works by restoring a healthy testosterone level in men who suffer from low T. Essentially, TRT is similar to insulin for people who have diabetes. The body lacks sufficient production of an essential hormone, and so requires an exogenous source to replace it - testosterone in this case. Although most men begin TRT after the age of 50, more men in their 30s and 40s are having their testosterone levels tested at wellness clinics like NV Medical Williamsburg. If you're experiencing symptoms like ED but think you're too young for testosterone replacement therapy, it's worth having your T levels checked by a doctor.

Our TRT Process

As the name implies, TRT replaces the testosterone that your body is missing, so it can function as it should. Unlike some TRT clinics, however, our doctors and practitioners take a personalized, comprehensive approach to testosterone replacement therapy.

If you are experiencing symptoms that may indicate low testosterone levels, it is important to undergo a thorough evaluation, including a medical history and physical examination, as well as laboratory studies. After discussing the potential risks and benefits of testosterone therapy with your healthcare provider, a decision can be made about whether to proceed with treatment.

There are several methods for administering testosterone, such as a gel that is applied to the skin, injections, pellets that are placed under the skin, and a new oral pill that has recently become available. Once treatment begins, regular monitoring of your lab results is essential to ensure that the therapy is effective and to make any necessary adjustments based on additional factors. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and are interested in exploring testosterone therapy, please reach out to NV Medical Williamsburg to schedule a private and confidential consultation with our Board-Certified Urologist.

WILLIAMSBURG — The Warhill High School girls lacrosse team made school history by bringing home the program’s first-ever conference championship trophy at the end of this season.

The Lions capped off an undefeated 13-win run with one last hard-fought victory in the conference final against a talented York High School team, leaving Sandford B. Wanner Stadium with a 19 to 12 win and their names etched into school history.

“They [York HS] are another talented up-and-coming program,” said Warhill Coach Anders Timberg in an interview with WYDaily. “It’s pretty exciting on this side of the water to see what the programs really have from a lacrosse perspective.”

The championship story for Warhill actually began in 2020. The team at the time was able to play one game before the rest of the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lions had an opportunity to continue to play in 2021, however, because the season was eventually pushed back and started later in the year.

That year’s Warhill team finished with a regular season record of nine wins and two losses. Both losses were suffered in a similar fashion, by single goals from Kellam High School — a team from Virginia Beach.

Despite a challenging and irregular season, that Warhill team was still able to find its way to the conference finals. The Lions came back from a 10-1 deficit, tying the score up in the second half, 12-12. Despite that strong effort, Warhill couldn’t hold on for the win, losing by one goal, 14-13.

“That’s where the story of this year’s team really started,” said Coach Timberg. “It was in that final disappointment and heartbreaking send-off to the few seniors we had that year. So our girls this season really made a commitment that they were going to get back to that game and that they were going to win it.”

The Warhill girls team just finished its eighth season as a program. This year the team was made up primarily of Juniors, now rising seniors.

“They were incredibly focused and I think that was one of the biggest traits of this team,” said Coach Timberg. “Selfless, and entirely focused on what they had to accomplish. We were down 4-1 but at no point did anybody panic.”

The roster’s individual accolades included eight all-conference players, one was named all-American, one of the seniors has committed to play at the University of Lynchburg, and two of the juniors are already committed to playing collegiately.

At the end of the game, the three team captains — Meghan DeGrandpre, Emma Timberg, and Alexis Flannigan — grasped the trophy.

“They were the de facto leaders and captains,” said Coach Timberg. “Just their commitment to lacrosse in Williamsburg, the program itself, and their teammates, it was really incredible.”

The game MVP award was given to Alexis Hillstrom. She set the single-game record for most draw wins in a game during the championship game.

The defensive MVP award was given to Warhill’s starting goalie, Francesca Lazzuri.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Avelo Airlines announced Tuesday that it will begin offering non-stop flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando from the Newport News-Williamsburg Airport (PHF) in October.

Service to Orlando will start at 11:45 a.m. on October 19, and service to Fort Lauderdale will start at 9 a.m. on October 20, according to a statement by Avelo Airlines.

Prices to fly to Orlando on the airline will start at $29, and customers can make reservations at AveloAir.com.

Avelo Airlines head of marketing, Travis Christ, said this is the only non-stop service to Florida on the peninsula.

"We’re super excited to be at Newport News," Christ said. "We’ve had our eyes on this city for quite a while. It fits the model that has been very successful for Avelo: to find airports that have been underserved, either the fares are high or they don’t have many flights, and oftentimes the people have to go for long drives.”

This is another option for travelers in Hampton Roads, according to the airport’s executive director Mike Giardino.

“Choice is what it’s all about,” he said. “We have such high demand on the Peninsula for air service. We know people drive, and that’s OK, but we’re here to bring service to the Peninsula where it belongs.”

Newport News Mayor McKinley Price noted that there is a lot of competition in the area between airports in Norfolk, Richmond, and D.C. He said this new service makes it easier for people on the peninsula to catch a flight.

“Because when you think of trying to leave from here going to Norfolk, you never know what’s going to happen in the tunnel," he said. "My sister, it took her six hours to get to DC this weekend, you just never know with the traffic.”

Price said the flights would be affordable and convenient for Hampton Roads locals.

“We are thrilled that Avelo Airlines is adding Newport News to the list of destinations they serve," Price said. "We also look forward to welcoming tourists to our great city and helping them discover new and unique Newport News experiences,” Price said.

Avelo said that Orlando is the theme park capital of the world, and Fort Lauderdale boasts sunny weather and plentiful beaches.

According to visitwilliamsburg.com, the airport is currently served by American Airlines and flies to over 150 destinations.

The 10 best states to retire in—and Florida isn’t No. 1

Move over, Florida, a new locale ranks as the best state to retire in.

Although in 2022 the Sunshine State was named the No. 1 state to retire in, Virginia has taken the top spot this year, according to personal finance website WalletHub’s “2023′s Best States to Retire” study.

WalletHub evaluated all 50 U.S. states in three key categories: affordability, quality of life and access to health care. Each category factored in data from various agencies, including the U.S. Census Bureau, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Council for Community and Economic Research.

A state’s overall retirement friendliness was based on its total score across all three categories. So even if a state scored high for affordability, lower scores for quality of life and health care could bring down its overall rank.

Virginia ranked 16th for affordability, and 11th for both quality of life and health care, but still earned the highest score overall. Looking at just affordability, Alabama ranked as the cheapest state to retire in.

Florida came in ninth in affordability and fourth in quality of life, but its 28th place ranking for health care brought down its overall ranking.

Here are the 10 best states to retire in, according to WalletHub:

Remember, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all way to retire, and where someone chooses to spend their post-work years will depend on various factors.

“When people think about retirement, where to live really depends on your priorities and goals,” Dawn Carr, a professor and faculty associate at Florida State University’s Pepper Institution on Aging and Public Policy, said in WalletHub’s study.

Your priority may be to live in a less expensive state, while someone else may want to live closer to family.

Regardless of where you hope to retire, try spending time at that location during different seasons of the year to get a feel for what it might be like to actually live there. This will also allow you to get a sense of what kind of opportunities a potential retirement community may offer.

“Choosing where to live is a big move in life and deserves all the upfront work necessary to check out those desires and assumptions as best as possible,” Kathy Black, a professor of aging studies at the University of South Florida, said in WalletHub’s report.

Big moves are happening in low-cost carrier land, with both Breeze Airways and Avelo Airlines announcing plans to expand. Some of these options are located close enough for Eastern Shore residents to consider taking advantage for trips to Florida.

Breeze is inaugurating new routes from 15 airports, including two new cities over the winter, while Avelo said it would open a new crew base and began service on two new routes.

Avelo will operate out of the New Castle, Delaware, airport (about a two-hour drive from Salisbury) beginning in February 2023. It opened flights out of Newport News, Virginia, in October. Meanwhile Breeze has flights out of Norfolk, Virginia, (about two-and-a-half hours from Salisbury) with plans to add Richmond flights in February 2023.

TRAVEL SAVINGS:Breeze Airways and Avelo Airlines announce expansion plans for this winter

Travel demand has been strong through 2022, and most executives have said during their recent earnings calls that they expect travelers to keep going places for the foreseeable future, even in traditionally slower periods.

Breeze's and Avelo's plans position both airlines to capture some of that demand.

Avelo in New Castle, Delaware

Avelo Airlines debuted in April 2021 with flights from the Hollywood Burbank Airport in California. It positions itself as a low-cost alternative to larger carriers with a focus on smaller, secondary airports in large markets. When flights started last year, it became one of the first new airlines in the U.S. in the last 14 years.

Shortly after getting its start in Burbank, Avelo added bases in New Haven, Connecticut and Orlando. The New Castle Airport will be its fourth home base.

Avelo will fly from the New Castle Airport to five Florida destinations: Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Tampa and West Palm Beach.

Avelo will have one Boeing 737 based at the New Castle Airport to start. As part of its business plan, the company flies round trip each day to avoid the costs of overnighting crews.

VIA DELAWARE:Flights to Florida from Delaware for $49: Why this time could be different for the airport

As with Allegiant and fellow discounters Frontier and Spirit, Avelo is offering cheap fares and charging extra for seat assignments and carry-on and checked bags.

"You pay for the things that you value,'' said Andrew Levy, Avelo Airlines' founder and CEO. He's a former top executive at Allegiant and United.

"Our very low fares and nonstop flights to five sun-soaked Florida destinations coupled with the fast and seamless experience at Wilmington Airport will make traveling easier than ever," Levy said in a statement. "We look forward to welcoming everyone aboard Avelo’s first (Wilmington) flight in February.”

Orlando will be Avelo's most frequent destination with morning flights offered on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. The airline will fly to the other destinations twice a week.

Frontier, which has since pulled out of service in New Castle, initially flew to Orlando three times per week before cutting its schedule to two times a week. In its first Delaware go-around, the airline flew to several other destinations, including Atlanta, Chicago and Denver.

In Virginia, the airline company offers nonstop flights from the Newport News-Williamsburg Airport to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale twice a week.

Avelo Airlines: Things travelers should know

Breeze Airways in Virginia

In February and March, Breeze will inaugurate 15 new routes, including introducing service to Cincinnati and Vero Beach, Florida.

“Breeze provides fast, efficient and affordable air service between underserved city pairs,” Breeze Airways President Tom Doxey said in a statement. “We’re excited to introduce two new cities to our national route network, as we add routes from 15 cities.”

More:Breeze Airways cuts routes, service; will it affect the start of flights from Vero Beach?

Among the new flights:

Introductory fares on the new routes start at $29 for the most bare-bones tickets and up to $199 for the airline's "Nicest" first-class cabin, which includes carry-on and checked baggage allowances, as well as drinks and snacks.

Breeze officials confirmed Oct. 31 that the carrier is temporarily suspending service to some destinations in December because of crew availability. Those 13 routes include flights between Tampa and Louisville, Kentucky; and between Columbus, Ohio and West Palm Beach. Yet the airline insists those reductions will have no impact on its plans to bring passenger airline service to the Vero Beach Regional Airport in February.

The New Journal's Brandon Holveck, USA TODAY's Zach Wichter and Dawn Gilbertson, Arizona Republic's Michael Salerno, and Treasure Coast Newspapers' Colleen Wixon contributed to this report.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - A line of heavy storms rocked parts of Williamsburg Sunday.

Trees were uprooted, several homes saw damage, and thousands were left without power.

There were also two homes on Jan Rae Circle that were severely damaged. Ray Kemp was outside with a family member when they saw the storms develop.

“He says 'Watch out!' and I look up and see this branch come down,” Kemp said.

Kemp said they then saw an entire tree crash straight through the kitchen, cutting the mobile home in half.

Several people and pets were home at the time. No injuries were reported, but Kemp said it was still devastating.

“I literally looked at it and said, 'That’s all my childhood memories, gone'." Kemp said.

A few houses down another house was hit by a fallen tree. Mohamed Lasri said his wife and three children were home when a large tree fell through the roof.

“I don’t care about the home, my kids are safe, that’s important to me,” Lasri said.
