Understanding the Importance of Testosterone in Your Body

head-bottom

When people hear the word "testosterone," they often associate it with overly aggressive or macho men. However, testosterone really has little impact on a man's masculinity, at least from a social standpoint. Rather, testosterone plays a much more important role in male development, from puberty to the end of life.

As the primary androgen, testosterone helps men develop typical male characteristics and is vital for the production of sperm. The pituitary gland and hypothalamus in the body control testosterone, and it helps men develop and maintain various functions such as:

What Causes Low Testosterone?

head-bottom

As men age, they may experience lower levels of testosterone, also known as low T. This natural decline in testosterone can also be caused by drug abuse, obesity, prescribed medications, or testicle injuries. When testosterone levels decrease, it can affect the body's balance of testosterone and estrogen, leading to an increase in abdominal fat and higher levels of estrogen. This hormonal imbalance can lead to a variety of issues that, when left untreated, can affect your quality of life in several ways.

The most common low testosterone signs in males include the following:

  • Erectile Dysfunction or ED
  • Increased Amounts of Body Fat
  • Lack of Concentration
  • More Irritability
  • Low Libido
  • Low Sperm Count
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Decrease in Muscle Mass
  • Lack of Motivation

If one or more of those symptoms are happening in your life right now, it could be because your body has a lack of testosterone. The only way to find out for certain is to have your testosterone levels tested at a qualified Sexual Wellness and Holistic Clinic, such as NV Medical Oak Ridge. If testing shows that you have low T, the next step in your recovery could be TRT in Oak Ridge, FL.

The Risks of Living Life with Low Testosterone

head-bottom

Some men may think to themselves, "I don't have the time or patience to undergo TRT in Oak Ridge, FL." While TRT treatments are quick, easy, and require no recovery time, we at NV Medical Oak Ridge understand that this type of therapy is not for everyone. Some men choose to rough it through this stage in their life, despite available solutions. While that is certainly an option, if you're considering this route, you should know that more is at risk than low libido and lack of motivation.

As frustrating as those symptoms can be, living with low testosterone often results in more serious issues that risk the health of your vital organs. If you're on the fence about bringing your testosterone levels back within normal range, keep these health risks in mind.

Diabetes

Diabetes

For those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes, it's possible that low testosterone levels could be a factor. Research has shown that men with low testosterone are more likely to develop diabetes as they age, and those with diabetes are also more likely to have low testosterone. Additionally, men with low T may struggle with insulin resistance. While testosterone replacement therapy won't cure diabetes, studies have suggested that men with healthy testosterone levels tend to have better blood sugar levels and a lower risk of obesity.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

If a doctor has informed you that you have high blood pressure, you may be curious about its root cause. Could it be due to aging? Is it hereditary? Or is there another factor at play? Research has shown that men who have low levels of testosterone are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases. When testosterone levels are low, red blood cell production is hindered, which can speed up the accumulation of plaque in your arteries. Over time, this plaque buildup can result in severe issues such as heart attacks and strokes.

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Many men face the challenge of excess body fat as they age, which can be discouraging when you're trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Despite eating well and exercising regularly, stubborn fat around the waistline can be difficult to get rid of. However, it's important to note that low testosterone levels may be the underlying cause. Studies have shown a correlation between low T and obesity, as testosterone helps regulate metabolism by controlling insulin, glucose, and fat. The good news is that undergoing TRT in combination with proper diet and exercise can lead to weight loss and improved blood glucose and low-density cholesterol levels.

Anemia

Anemia

Anemia occurs when the body lacks or has dysfunctional red blood cells, resulting in reduced oxygen supply to organs. Men with low testosterone levels are at a higher risk of anemia since testosterone plays a role in healthy red blood cell production. A study conducted in 2009 revealed that older men with low T have five times more chances of being anemic compared to men with normal testosterone levels. Although testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is not a cure for anemia, it can help in the production of more red blood cells, which may prevent anemia.

TRT in Oak Ridge, FL: A Reliable Solution to Low Testosterone

head-bottom

To fully appreciate the advantages of testosterone replacement therapy from NV Medical Oak Ridge, it's crucial to grasp its mechanism. Testosterone was first synthesized in a laboratory in 1935 and has been prescribed to counteract low testosterone levels in clinical settings ever since. Over the last few decades, it has emerged as one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the US.

TRT works by restoring a healthy testosterone level in men who suffer from low T. Essentially, TRT is similar to insulin for people who have diabetes. The body lacks sufficient production of an essential hormone, and so requires an exogenous source to replace it - testosterone in this case. Although most men begin TRT after the age of 50, more men in their 30s and 40s are having their testosterone levels tested at wellness clinics like NV Medical Oak Ridge. If you're experiencing symptoms like ED but think you're too young for testosterone replacement therapy, it's worth having your T levels checked by a doctor.

Our TRT Process

As the name implies, TRT replaces the testosterone that your body is missing, so it can function as it should. Unlike some TRT clinics, however, our doctors and practitioners take a personalized, comprehensive approach to testosterone replacement therapy.

After discussing the potential risks and benefits of testosterone therapy with your healthcare provider, a decision can be made about whether to proceed with treatment.

There are several methods for administering testosterone, such as a gel that is applied to the skin, injections, pellets that are placed under the skin, and a new oral pill that has recently become available. Once treatment begins, regular monitoring of your lab results is essential to ensure that the therapy is effective and to make any necessary adjustments based on additional factors. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and are interested in exploring testosterone therapy, please reach out to NV Medical Oak Ridge to schedule a private and confidential consultation with our Board-Certified Urologist.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County Fire Rescue and the State Fire Marshal are currently investigating what started an apartment fire in Oak Ridge early Saturday morning.

The fire was reported at The Isles at East Millenia apartments near Lake Fountain Drive and Orange Blossom Trail. Orange County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) officials said they responded to several reports of smoke and several people hanging on to balconies.

The fire was reported at 4:11 a.m. at The Isles at East Millenia apartments, near Lake Fountain Drive and Orange Blossom Trail. Orange County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) officials said they responded to several reports of smoke and several people hanging on to balconies.

Less than ten minutes after arriving on scene, first responders said they rescued eight people from the burning building, including a one-year-old girl. OCSO Deputy William Puzynski said his instincts kicked into gear when he heard a child screaming.

Amazing video of OCSO Deputy rescuing baby girl from fire! Early this morning, deputies were assisting @OCFireRescue & saw a baby & mom on 3rd floor balcony with flames coming from the apartment. Deputy Puzynski climbed the outside balconies & mom handed baby down to him. pic.twitter.com/T5JeXLY7tA

— Orange County Sheriff's Office (@OrangeCoSheriff) April 23, 2022

“It’s hard to explain. I just knew I had to save the baby,” Puzynski said. “I don’t think I was thinking. I just had to figure out a way.”

Puzynski said he scaled the building with help from his fellow deputies and successfully rescued the baby girl from the third floor, the most heavily-impacted level of the structure.

It was the kind of tense, fast-paced situation first responders train for, said Orange County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Steve Sherrill.

“We train for all situations. The roof came down, so there was heavy fire up in the attic. Part of the floor collapsed as well,” Sherrill said. “So making access into some of those apartments was a bit difficult, but that’s something that we train for.”

Sherrill said firefighters had no time to set up a command center Saturday morning due to the severity of the situation: a practice they usually do when they arrive on scene. Instead of putting out the fire first, responders jumped immediately into rescue mode, working to save the lives they saw were clearly at risk.

"When we got here, there was fire rolling out of the roof, people hanging from the balconies and screaming, and all of our crews did a great job. They threw ladders onto the buildings and got everybody out safely," Sherrill said.

Sherrill said such a rapid response was possible because of the fire department’s suppression units, which are partially funded by grants.

“All of our suppression units have four people on there and you know, this is why,” Sherrill said. “Getting all these [responders] to the scene quickly is what saved the bulk of these people.”

Firefighters said because the fire made its way to the attic area, posing an electrical hazard, they cut power to the entirety of the building that was damaged. Power would remain off until electricians could come verify whether it was safe to turn back on, Sherrill said.

Twelve of the building’s 24 units were directly impacted, according to a tweet from fire rescue. There were no fatalities or major injuries. However, a couple who lived on the third floor told Spectrum News they were grieving the loss of their beloved animals in Saturday morning’s fire.

‘C’ing the difference: Oak Ridge Elementary on a path to prove itself

Oak Ridge Elementary had one more chance to prove itself.

The school of Shelfer Road had scored an “F” and three “Ds” in a row in the state grading system since 2013. During this past school year, Leon County Schools contracted with an outside company to be on standby for whatever happened next.

More:'Operation Save the School': How Pineview turned around an 'F' grade into an EPIC future

If the elementary scored anything below a “C” on the 2019 standardized assessments, LCS would have to pay private educational logistics company Turnaround Solutions, Inc. hundreds of thousands of dollars to reevaluate the school and make serious changes. If the school scored a "C" or higher, LCS had to pay them $50,000.

Recently appointed principal Jasmine Smith's job was in jeopardy, along with other administrators and staff. The new company would replace her, overhaul the curriculum if necessary, restructure the classes. Who knew how student enrollment would fare?

“That would have been it,” Smith said recently, thinking back to the tense climate at the school.

But it wasn’t.

This July, the entire elementary celebrated a resounding victory when Florida’s Department of Education handed Oak Ridge its first “C” grade in six years.

“It really is just the story of what happens when teachers, parents and a community come together to support students,” Smith said Thursday. “Through partnerships you can’t even imagine.”

The elementary had reached out to its community to help. Through donations from nearby businesses, mentorship programs, clothing donations, and churches hosting events, locals answered the school’s call for help. Oak Ridge also collaborated with Pineview Elementary throughout the year to see what was working.

Both schools receive Title 1 funding from the U.S. government because most students enrolled qualify for a free/reduced lunch plan due to low family incomes. Title 1 funding helps to offset the impacts of poverty on children seeking an education.

Student demographics also are roughly the same. More than 80% of the students enrolled at both schools are African American, though Pineview teaches more Hispanic students than Oak Ridge.

Because of the low grades, the school district appointed new administration to the schools. The new principals mobilized to overhaul the schools’ cultures and collaborated with teachers to create change. They integrated the schools with their neighborhoods and had to pay rigorous attention to student performance data throughout the year without ruining morale.

For 14-year veteran teacher Antwan Cole, Oak Ridge’s “C” grade demonstrates what the kids have always been capable of doing. He emphasized that he believes the FSA test only shows a snapshot of what the students are feeling at the moment they take the exam.

“These students show greatness on a daily basis,” he said.

Cole teaches 4th grade math. The percentage of students at Oak Ridge who passed the standardized test in his subject this year surpassed the district-wide percentage, 75% to 66%. His students even outperformed the statewide percentage by almost 10 percentage points.

How did you school do on the 2019 FSA? Check out our database

Throughout his years at Oak Ridge, Cole has seen “the ups and the downs,” but said the school has developed “a family atmosphere.”

“We’re very supportive of one another,” he said. “We’re involved in the students.”

He tries to go to sporting events after hours to show his commitment to students as individuals, not just as “a number,” he added.

LCS School Board member Darryl Jones represents both Oak Ridge and Pineview. Jones was elected to the board in November 2018 and oversees the schools in the county’s southwest region.

“Their success reminds us of how important leadership is,” Jones said of the schools. “Their leaders created a climate that was optimal for learning and that’s what made the difference.”

The Inverness City Council passed an amendment revolving around the recent construction of a columbarium within the Oak Ridge Cemetery.

City Clerk Susan Jackson highlighted the importance of maintaining the sacred nature of the cemetery. “We want to concentrate on the overall aesthetics of the cemetery being that sacred and holy ground,” she emphasized. If approved, the regulations for the columbarium will dictate that personalization of niche covers must be coordinated and ordered through the City Clerk’s Office. The process will employ a predetermined template containing the individual’s name and dates of birth and death.

The discussion took a lighthearted turn when Councilman Cabot McBride raised a question about the in-house inscription process. It was clarified by Cemetery Director Bruce Jordan that the inscriptions would be handled by a local monument builder who already provides such services to the city.

A more substantive question arose from Councilman Gene Davis, who inquired about the possibility of selling back the space in the columbarium. Davis pondered, “What happens if a situation changes? Something changes in my life and … I’m going somewhere else and I want my urns ‘up there.’ Now, do they have the ability to sell it back to you?” Jordan responded, “Yes, we sell about the same way that we have resales in the existing cemetery ground,” assuring that the city would sell back the space at the same price it was initially sold.

The amendment outlines the following regulations for the columbarium:

Personalization of niche covers must be organized and ordered through the City Clerk’s Office, using a pre-designed template that includes the individual’s name and dates of birth and death.

No items shall be placed, attached, hung, or affixed to the columbarium structure, niche covers, base foundation, or surrounding grounds.

Violation of the regulations will be addressed by the city without prior notice, and any damage resulting from such violation will be the responsibility of the named owner of the Rights to Inurn certificate holder.

About columbariums:

A columbarium is an above-ground structure designed for the placement of cremains. The columbarium at Oak Ridge Cemetery holds 48 niches, each capable of housing two urns, with each niche measuring 1’x1’x1’.
