Understanding the Importance of Testosterone in Your Body

head-bottom

When people hear the word "testosterone," they often associate it with overly aggressive or macho men. However, testosterone really has little impact on a man's masculinity, at least from a social standpoint. Rather, testosterone plays a much more important role in male development, from puberty to the end of life.

As the primary androgen, testosterone helps men develop typical male characteristics and is vital for the production of sperm. The pituitary gland and hypothalamus in the body control testosterone, and it helps men develop and maintain various functions such as:

What Causes Low Testosterone?

head-bottom

As men age, they may experience lower levels of testosterone, also known as low T. This natural decline in testosterone can also be caused by drug abuse, obesity, prescribed medications, or testicle injuries. When testosterone levels decrease, it can affect the body's balance of testosterone and estrogen, leading to an increase in abdominal fat and higher levels of estrogen. This hormonal imbalance can lead to a variety of issues that, when left untreated, can affect your quality of life in several ways.

The most common low testosterone signs in males include the following:

  • Erectile Dysfunction or ED
  • Increased Amounts of Body Fat
  • Lack of Concentration
  • More Irritability
  • Low Libido
  • Low Sperm Count
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Decrease in Muscle Mass
  • Lack of Motivation

If one or more of those symptoms are happening in your life right now, it could be because your body has a lack of testosterone. The only way to find out for certain is to have your testosterone levels tested at a qualified Sexual Wellness and Holistic Clinic, such as NV Medical Longwood. If testing shows that you have low T, the next step in your recovery could be TRT in Longwood, FL.

The Risks of Living Life with Low Testosterone

head-bottom

Some men may think to themselves, "I don't have the time or patience to undergo TRT in Longwood, FL." While TRT treatments are quick, easy, and require no recovery time, we at NV Medical Longwood understand that this type of therapy is not for everyone. Some men choose to rough it through this stage in their life, despite available solutions. While that is certainly an option, if you're considering this route, you should know that more is at risk than low libido and lack of motivation.

As frustrating as those symptoms can be, living with low testosterone often results in more serious issues that risk the health of your vital organs. If you're on the fence about bringing your testosterone levels back within normal range, keep these health risks in mind.

Diabetes

Diabetes

For those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes, it's possible that low testosterone levels could be a factor. Research has shown that men with low testosterone are more likely to develop diabetes as they age, and those with diabetes are also more likely to have low testosterone. Additionally, men with low T may struggle with insulin resistance. While testosterone replacement therapy won't cure diabetes, studies have suggested that men with healthy testosterone levels tend to have better blood sugar levels and a lower risk of obesity.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

If a doctor has informed you that you have high blood pressure, you may be curious about its root cause. Could it be due to aging? Is it hereditary? Or is there another factor at play? Research has shown that men who have low levels of testosterone are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases. When testosterone levels are low, red blood cell production is hindered, which can speed up the accumulation of plaque in your arteries. Over time, this plaque buildup can result in severe issues such as heart attacks and strokes.

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Many men face the challenge of excess body fat as they age, which can be discouraging when you're trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Despite eating well and exercising regularly, stubborn fat around the waistline can be difficult to get rid of. However, it's important to note that low testosterone levels may be the underlying cause. Studies have shown a correlation between low T and obesity, as testosterone helps regulate metabolism by controlling insulin, glucose, and fat. The good news is that undergoing TRT in combination with proper diet and exercise can lead to weight loss and improved blood glucose and low-density cholesterol levels.

Anemia

Anemia

Anemia occurs when the body lacks or has dysfunctional red blood cells, resulting in reduced oxygen supply to organs. Men with low testosterone levels are at a higher risk of anemia since testosterone plays a role in healthy red blood cell production. A study conducted in 2009 revealed that older men with low T have five times more chances of being anemic compared to men with normal testosterone levels. Although testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is not a cure for anemia, it can help in the production of more red blood cells, which may prevent anemia.

TRT in Longwood, FL: A Reliable Solution to Low Testosterone

head-bottom

To fully appreciate the advantages of testosterone replacement therapy from NV Medical Longwood, it's crucial to grasp its mechanism. Testosterone was first synthesized in a laboratory in 1935 and has been prescribed to counteract low testosterone levels in clinical settings ever since. Over the last few decades, it has emerged as one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the US.

TRT works by restoring a healthy testosterone level in men who suffer from low T. Essentially, TRT is similar to insulin for people who have diabetes. The body lacks sufficient production of an essential hormone, and so requires an exogenous source to replace it - testosterone in this case. Although most men begin TRT after the age of 50, more men in their 30s and 40s are having their testosterone levels tested at wellness clinics like NV Medical Longwood. If you're experiencing symptoms like ED but think you're too young for testosterone replacement therapy, it's worth having your T levels checked by a doctor.

There are several methods for administering testosterone, such as a gel that is applied to the skin, injections, pellets that are placed under the skin, and a new oral pill that has recently become available. LONGWOOD, Fla. —

Angelo Owens, 9, came face-to-face with one of the most venomous snakes in the world on Wednesday.

"Yeah, it was in the corner," Angelo said about the four-foot diamondback rattlesnake.

"Scary, it had me shaking for a while," Alex Owens, Angelo's father, said about the encounter.

Angelo was hanging out in the backyard of his grandmother's house in Longwood when he spotted something in the corner.

"I thought it was a stuffed animal," Angelo said.

When he realized it was a snake, Angelo told his family, who thought it was just a classic garden variety. They thought it was completely harmless until they heard it.

"Just a real loud hiss. You could hear it two to three houses away — it was loud," Alex said.

It was Bob Cross, Central Florida's renowned critter catcher, who wrangled up the rattlesnake.

The Owens family says they know about wildlife in Florida. They've seen coyotes, foxes and even bears, one of which got into their garage.

But a rattlesnake? Grandma says that is where she puts her foot down. Fortunately, Angelo didn't put his foot down in the wrong place.

"He's a lucky boy. Had he not been wise enough to go get mom — boys being boys — if he had tried to pick it up or get near it, this would be a different story," Angelo said.

The snake's story ends with a trip to its new home: a reptile center that will collect its venom to make antivenin that saves lives, while another close encounter with a rattlesnake has a completely different ending.

The family says they called FWC for help, but the officers who came out said they're not able to deal with venomous snakes and gave them a list of people who could.

LONGWOOD, Fla. — Residents in a Longwood neighborhood say coyotes are taking over. They are concerned about their pets and children after two dogs were attacked and bitten and cats have gone missing.

During the day coyotes can be seen coming up to the fences of backyards and staring at dogs. At night you can hear their cries.

“And there’s a lot of them. We hear them all hours of the day and night and we see them. They’re not scared,” said resident Samantha Taylor.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s website, the agency does not remove coyotes, writing that it’s an ineffective means to control their population. FWC recommends scaring the coyotes by waving your arms and yelling to make them uncomfortable and force them to move on to another area.

Trapper Joshua Morera, who owns Spartan Wildlife Removal in Casselberry, saw Taylor’s story and offered up his services to help.

“Usually I would charge but in this situation, I’m not going to. There’s been dogs that got bit, you know there are kids here, there are families here that are concerned. Cat went missing, unfortunately,” Morera said.

Morera said the neighborhood is overrun by the coyotes. He found at least 15 dens so far.

“I know there are animal lovers out there, but you can’t save every animal. It’s either us or your family or the animals. Unfortunately, with coyotes, the state law is we have to euthanize,” Morera said.

Morera said once they get rid of all the coyotes here they will destroy the dens to ensure other packs don’t take up residence here.

Box Score TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Weather delays started out as the main story from the JoAnne Graf Classic in Tallahassee, Florida this weekend. Longwood softball sure changed that narrative in a hurry.

A Lancer program that has a storied legacy of success stunned No. 4 Florida State with a 5-4 win on Saturday night that goes down as the highest ranked win in the program's history.

Longwood (1-1) persevered to earn the win after a weather delay pushed the start back to 6 p.m. Then, in the sixth inning, weather again forced a temporary stoppage.

However, the Lancers, who claimed a share of the Big South regular season title last year and have won five Big South Tournament titles in 10 seasons, never wavered, and their patience was rewarded with a one-run win over the preseason ACC favorites.

The pitching staff combined to throw a three-hitter against a Seminole side that won 55 games a season ago, and the offense piled up 11 hits that paved the way for five runs.

Freshman Maggie Chapin earned the win in her first collegiate start, and she didn't allow a hit while pitching into the fifth inning. She struck out four.

"Maggie has worked so hard," said head coach Dr. Megan Brown. "She has grown so much these past few months and is seeing the results of her hard work."

Er'ron Burton earned the save with 2.2 relief innings. She struck out a pair and clamped down on a Florida State rally.

"Er'ron loves to pitch, and she is also a tremendously hard worker," said Dr. Brown. "We knew that great teams like Florida State don't go away easy, and I am very proud of how our team fought down the stretch tonight."

Longwood roared out of the gates early with a two-run first inning. They tacked on three more in the second when Lauren Taylor, Kayley DeVivi and Korynna Anderson all cranked out RBI singles. The Seminoles fans in attendance could only watch in shock as their team was quickly trailing 5-0.

Florida State (2-1) finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth as Katie Dack's three-run blast cut the Lancer lead to 5-3. The weather interfered again in the sixth inning and suspended the game for more than one hour.

Upon the returning to play, the Seminoles drove in another run to cut the Lancers lead to only one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Burton, who started Friday's game against Purdue, slammed the door shut by retiring the side in order, 1-2-3, in the bottom of the seventh.

"I'm so excited for our young ladies and this team," said Dr. Brown. "It took all 18 of them tonight and was truly a team effort on all fronts."

The Lancers will be back in action tomorrow morning to conclude the weekend's games at the JoAnne Graf Classic. Longwood will take on Purdue at 10 a.m. and will face Florida State in a rematch of Saturday night's thriller at 12:15 p.m.

LONGWOOD, Fla. - A dog was found alive after vanishing following an encounter with a bear in a Seminole County neighborhood earlier this week, the Florida Fish and Wildlife (FWC) confirmed Thursday morning.

Officials said a man was walking the dog along Winding Pine Trail in Longwood Tuesday night when the attack happened. The man was taken to a hospital after suffering a large head wound. His condition was not immediately released.

In an update Thursday morning, a FWC spokesperson said they believe the man's injuries were "secondary to the interaction with the bear." According to an incident report, the man's injury appeared to be consistent with falling on the pavement, not from the bear's claws.

The incident remains under investigation.

FOX 35 News exclusively spoke with the neighbors who rushed to help the man and his dog during the bear encounter.

"I heard what sounded like a dog screaming," Jackie Coggin, who lives nearby, said. "I rolled my window down and could see in the dark a bear standing over the dog."

Coggin drove her car between the bear and the man being attacked, flashing her lights to scare the animal. She said it let the dog go, and more people came to help the man, injured on the ground.

When Florida Attacks: How to live with bears

When Florida Attacks: How to live with bears

FOX 35 talks with Mike Orlando, the lead bear program manager with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, about bears in Central Florida. How many are there? Where do they go? Why do we see them in backyards? And do bears attack, and why?

What should you do if you encounter a bear?

The presence of black bears in Florida is not typically a problem or threat to your safety, but it's important to remember that they are wild animals and deserve respect.

Black bears are normally too shy to risk contact with humans, but their powerful need to find food can overwhelm their fear, officials said.

The FWC urges residents to be aware of their surroundings and walk dogs on a short leash.

If you see a bear, the FWC said to make sure you are in a safe area, make sure the bear has a clear escape route, and then scare the bear! This can be done by yelling, banging pots and pans, using an air horn, or anything else that makes a lot of noise.

If you feel threatened by a bear or notice a bear that is visibly sick, injured, dead, or orphaned, you're asked to call the FWC wildlife alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922). You're also asked to contact wildlife officials if you see someone harming bears or intentionally feeding them.

LONGWOOD, Fla. – Dozens of UPS employees gathered outside a facility in Longwood on Thursday morning for what’s called a practice picket.

Those who participated said the point of the demonstration was to show the company they’re serious about the contract negotiations that are underway.

“It’s time this company took care of us,” UPS employee Chris Loulan said. “I mean, we were heroes five years ago, you know, essential workers. And now they can’t seem to find enough money to take care of it.”

Loulan has been working for UPS for 37 years. He said he remembers the last time employees went on strike 25 years ago. He said they’re fighting for better pay, especially for part-time workers.

[TRENDING: Become a News 6 Insider]

“They’re very underpaid,” Loulan said. “The stats are out there. With the inflation as it is, they’re not making a lot of money. They need to be taken care of. And the turnover is high too because they’re not making what they’re making at Burger King or McDonald’s.”

This all comes as contract negotiations between the Teamsters union and UPS broke down last Wednesday. Both sides are blaming each other from walking away from the table.

“They’re not saying what the details are, but it’s close but not close enough,” said Sean Mason, UPS employee and Teamsters Local Union 385 trustee. “Our company really wants us to get it done.”

Mason has been with UPS for 27 years. While the employee contracts aren’t up until July 31, they’re making their message clear weeks in advance.

“We’re sending a message nationwide,” Mason said. “This picketing is going across the nation, this practice picketing to let the company know we’re serious about this and this is what they can see on August 1 if they don’t give us a fair contract.”

The current contract is set to expire on July 31 at midnight.
