Understanding the Importance of Testosterone in Your Body

head-bottom

When people hear the word "testosterone," they often associate it with overly aggressive or macho men. However, testosterone really has little impact on a man's masculinity, at least from a social standpoint. Rather, testosterone plays a much more important role in male development, from puberty to the end of life.

As the primary androgen, testosterone helps men develop typical male characteristics and is vital for the production of sperm. The pituitary gland and hypothalamus in the body control testosterone, and it helps men develop and maintain various functions such as:

What Causes Low Testosterone?

head-bottom

As men age, they may experience lower levels of testosterone, also known as low T. This natural decline in testosterone can also be caused by drug abuse, obesity, prescribed medications, or testicle injuries. When testosterone levels decrease, it can affect the body's balance of testosterone and estrogen, leading to an increase in abdominal fat and higher levels of estrogen. This hormonal imbalance can lead to a variety of issues that, when left untreated, can affect your quality of life in several ways.

The most common low testosterone signs in males include the following:

  • Erectile Dysfunction or ED
  • Increased Amounts of Body Fat
  • Lack of Concentration
  • More Irritability
  • Low Libido
  • Low Sperm Count
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Decrease in Muscle Mass
  • Lack of Motivation

If one or more of those symptoms are happening in your life right now, it could be because your body has a lack of testosterone. The only way to find out for certain is to have your testosterone levels tested at a qualified Sexual Wellness and Holistic Clinic, such as NV Medical Lake Nona. If testing shows that you have low T, the next step in your recovery could be TRT in Lake Nona, FL.

The Risks of Living Life with Low Testosterone

head-bottom

Some men may think to themselves, "I don't have the time or patience to undergo TRT in Lake Nona, FL." While TRT treatments are quick, easy, and require no recovery time, we at NV Medical Lake Nona understand that this type of therapy is not for everyone. Some men choose to rough it through this stage in their life, despite available solutions. While that is certainly an option, if you're considering this route, you should know that more is at risk than low libido and lack of motivation.

As frustrating as those symptoms can be, living with low testosterone often results in more serious issues that risk the health of your vital organs. If you're on the fence about bringing your testosterone levels back within normal range, keep these health risks in mind.

Diabetes

Diabetes

For those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes, it's possible that low testosterone levels could be a factor. Research has shown that men with low testosterone are more likely to develop diabetes as they age, and those with diabetes are also more likely to have low testosterone. Additionally, men with low T may struggle with insulin resistance. While testosterone replacement therapy won't cure diabetes, studies have suggested that men with healthy testosterone levels tend to have better blood sugar levels and a lower risk of obesity.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

If a doctor has informed you that you have high blood pressure, you may be curious about its root cause. Could it be due to aging? Is it hereditary? Or is there another factor at play? Research has shown that men who have low levels of testosterone are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases. When testosterone levels are low, red blood cell production is hindered, which can speed up the accumulation of plaque in your arteries. Over time, this plaque buildup can result in severe issues such as heart attacks and strokes.

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Many men face the challenge of excess body fat as they age, which can be discouraging when you're trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Despite eating well and exercising regularly, stubborn fat around the waistline can be difficult to get rid of. However, it's important to note that low testosterone levels may be the underlying cause. Studies have shown a correlation between low T and obesity, as testosterone helps regulate metabolism by controlling insulin, glucose, and fat. The good news is that undergoing TRT in combination with proper diet and exercise can lead to weight loss and improved blood glucose and low-density cholesterol levels.

Anemia

Anemia

Anemia occurs when the body lacks or has dysfunctional red blood cells, resulting in reduced oxygen supply to organs. Men with low testosterone levels are at a higher risk of anemia since testosterone plays a role in healthy red blood cell production. A study conducted in 2009 revealed that older men with low T have five times more chances of being anemic compared to men with normal testosterone levels. Although testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is not a cure for anemia, it can help in the production of more red blood cells, which may prevent anemia.

TRT in Lake Nona, FL: A Reliable Solution to Low Testosterone

head-bottom

To fully appreciate the advantages of testosterone replacement therapy from NV Medical Lake Nona, it's crucial to grasp its mechanism. Testosterone was first synthesized in a laboratory in 1935 and has been prescribed to counteract low testosterone levels in clinical settings ever since. Over the last few decades, it has emerged as one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the US.

TRT works by restoring a healthy testosterone level in men who suffer from low T. Essentially, TRT is similar to insulin for people who have diabetes. The body lacks sufficient production of an essential hormone, and so requires an exogenous source to replace it - testosterone in this case. Although most men begin TRT after the age of 50, more men in their 30s and 40s are having their testosterone levels tested at wellness clinics like NV Medical Lake Nona. If you're experiencing symptoms like ED but think you're too young for testosterone replacement therapy, it's worth having your T levels checked by a doctor.

There are several methods for administering testosterone, such as a gel that is applied to the skin, injections, pellets that are placed under the skin, and a new oral pill that has recently become available. A family dinner near Lake Nona took an unexpected turn when Eddy Montero's life was saved by doctors who happened to be dining nearby.

Montero, expecting a dinner with his daughters and grandkids, was sitting with his family when he started to feel dizzy. Moments later, he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest, WESH 2 reports.

Luckily for Montero and his family, four doctors from Florida Osceola HCA Hospital were just tables away enjoying a meal of their own: Dr. Nicole Brenner and three of the hospital’s residents: Dr. Sonia Alicea, Dr. Amanda Rivera and Dr. Suhail Saad-Omer.

Brenner and her three residents quickly got to work. Brenner told WESH that they immediately checked Montero’s pulse, which indicated that he was in cardiac arrest, then began CPR.

After taking turns giving chest compressions, nearby medical support arrived to relocate Montero to a nearby medical facility where he was treated.

“It truly feels like we were meant to be there,” Brenner told WESH 2. The planned community started out as a medical campus, so maybe it’s the safest place in town to dine out.

Once receiving life-saving care, Montero referred to Brenner, Alicea, Rivera and Saad-Omer as his four angels.

UCF Lake Nona Hospital announced Friday it received LEED Gold certification — the first and only hospital in Florida and only the 28th in the nation — to achieve this green building designation. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, (USGBC), is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and an international symbol of excellence.

UCF Lake Nona Hospital is a joint venture between the university and HCA Healthcare that opened two years ago adjacent to the UCF College of Medicine in the heart of Lake Nona’s Medical City. In addition to providing needed in-patient care to non-veteran adults in the community, the hospital serves as an education site for UCF medical and nursing students and a site for collaborative medical research.

The designation recognizes the hospital’s commitment to sustainable building products and energy-saving operations, including:

“Today we celebrate another step towards creating improved health and wellness in Lake Nona and Central Florida. Sustainability is a growing priority and we are excited about this recognition by the USGBC,” says Wendy Brandon, CEO of UCF Lake Nona Hospital.“This is one more way I am proud of the work we are doing at UCF Lake Nona Hospital.”

Through design, construction and operations practices that improve environmental and human health, LEED-certified buildings are helping to make the world more sustainable. In the U.S. alone, buildings account for almost 40% of national CO2 emissions, but LEED-certified buildings have 34 percent lower CO2 emissions, consume 25% less energy and 11% less water, and have diverted more than 80 million tons of waste from landfills. UCF is home to 30 other LEED certified buildings, including the College of Medicine in Lake Nona, Dr. Phillips Academic Commons at UCF Downtown and Classroom Building II on main campus.

“This is an exceptional accomplishment for both UCF and HCA,” says Amy Pastor, USGBC Central Florida Board chair, who attended Friday’s announcement. “You are among the best and you will be known worldwide for this.”

“LEED was created to make the world a better place and revolutionize our buildings and communities by providing everyone with access to healthy, green and high performing buildings,” says Peter Templeton, president and CEO of USGBC. “UCF Lake Nona Hospital is a prime example of how the innovative work of project teams can create local solutions that contribute to making a global difference.”

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A Lake Nona resident is recovering at Orlando Regional Medical Center after being struck by lightning right outside her home.

Tuesday, Rebecca Soto was painting her nails and preparing her outfit for the Beyonce concert Wednesday at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

Her husband, Lauro Soto, said that right after Rebecca Soto showed him her outfit, she took their dog Drake out for a walk.

“It had to be like five or 10 seconds. As soon as she stepped outside, I heard the loudest boom that I’ve ever heard in my life,” Lauro Soto said.

The noise was so loud, Lauro Soto said alarms went off in their apartment complex.

[EXCLUSIVE: Become a News 6 Insider (it’s FREE) | PINIT! Share your photos]

He went to ask his wife if she heard the boom, and that’s when he found her lying face-down on the sidewalk.

He immediately called 911, while performing CPR simultaneously.

Lauro Soto said strangers and neighbors rushed over to help him with his wife while they awaited paramedics.

“Somewhere in between them picking her up and the ambulance ride, her heart had stopped, and they were able to defibrillate her and bring her back,” Lauro Soto said.

He said he was in shock and only operating off of adrenaline.

She was rushed to the nearest emergency room, and Lauro Soto followed behind in a car with his neighbor.

Lauro Soto sat in the waiting room with the worst-case scenarios plaguing his mind.

“She looked lifeless when I was working on her,” Lauro Soto said.

After Rebecca Soto stabilized, she was transferred to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where doctors ran various tests.

Eventually, she was able to open her eyes, speak and hold tight to her husband’s hand.

She has been experiencing memory loss issues, but Lauro Soto said it is clear she’s progressing.

“When we told her that she missed the Beyonce concert, she was devastated,” Lauro Soto said.

Of course, she is happy to be alive and surrounded by the people she loves most.

“I won’t take that for granted,” Lauro Soto said.

He said Rebecca could be released Saturday morning or as early as Friday night.

The hospital is out of network for their insurance, so the medical bills are significantly higher.

The family created a GoFundMe and is asking for donations to help pay for the medical expenses.

Nearly 24 hours after Disney made the announcement that the company is pulling out of plans for Lake Nona, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis responded.

While in New Hampshire Friday, the governor said, “To put one corporation on a pedestal and let them be exempt from the laws? It’s not good policy. It’s not free-market economics. And it’s not something our state is going to be involved in, and so we will not change from that. And so they can do whatever they want. I know people try to chirp and say this or that — the chance of us backing down from that is zero.”

Disney did not give a specific reason for the decision to cancel the $1 billion investment plan for Lake Nona, instead releasing a statement that reads in part, “Given the considerable changes that have occurred since the announcement of this project, including new leadership and changing business conditions, we have decided not to move forward with construction of the campus.”

[TRENDING: Become a News 6 Insider]

Back in 2021 under the leadership of former CEO Bob Chapek, Disney announced it would build a corporate office complex off Lake Nona Boulevard, bringing 2,000 Disney workers from California to the Central Florida area.

However, now-CEO Robert Iger was reportedly much less optimistic about the project, telling other employees upon his return to Disney that it made little sense to move Imagineering so far away from Disney’s movie studios, according to The New York Times.

The cancelation comes as Iger reverses many of Chapek’s decisions as part of a reconfiguration project to cut back on costs as the company struggles with dwindling stock prices.

Sean Snaith, the Director of the Institute for Economic Forecasting at University of Central Florida, said, “I think this doesn’t really change the trajectory for the Lake Nona region or Orlando in general.”

Snaith said while the news is big, it might not have a huge overall impact on the Lake Nona economy.

“We still have strong economic growth. We still have very strong population growth,” Snaith said.

He told New 6 that the long game will likely still look the same.

While no one knows what’s going to happen to the 60 acres of land, in terms of who might end up owning it, he said it will likely still see development, and that area will continue to see growth.
