Understanding the Importance of Testosterone in Your Body

head-bottom

When people hear the word "testosterone," they often associate it with overly aggressive or macho men. However, testosterone really has little impact on a man's masculinity, at least from a social standpoint. Rather, testosterone plays a much more important role in male development, from puberty to the end of life.

As the primary androgen, testosterone helps men develop typical male characteristics and is vital for the production of sperm. The pituitary gland and hypothalamus in the body control testosterone, and it helps men develop and maintain various functions such as:

What Causes Low Testosterone?

head-bottom

As men age, they may experience lower levels of testosterone, also known as low T. This natural decline in testosterone can also be caused by drug abuse, obesity, prescribed medications, or testicle injuries. When testosterone levels decrease, it can affect the body's balance of testosterone and estrogen, leading to an increase in abdominal fat and higher levels of estrogen. This hormonal imbalance can lead to a variety of issues that, when left untreated, can affect your quality of life in several ways.

The most common low testosterone signs in males include the following:

  • Erectile Dysfunction or ED
  • Increased Amounts of Body Fat
  • Lack of Concentration
  • More Irritability
  • Low Libido
  • Low Sperm Count
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Decrease in Muscle Mass
  • Lack of Motivation

If one or more of those symptoms are happening in your life right now, it could be because your body has a lack of testosterone. The only way to find out for certain is to have your testosterone levels tested at a qualified Sexual Wellness and Holistic Clinic, such as NV Medical Kissimmee. If testing shows that you have low T, the next step in your recovery could be TRT in Kissimmee, FL.

The Risks of Living Life with Low Testosterone

head-bottom

Some men may think to themselves, "I don't have the time or patience to undergo TRT in Kissimmee, FL." While TRT treatments are quick, easy, and require no recovery time, we at NV Medical Kissimmee understand that this type of therapy is not for everyone. Some men choose to rough it through this stage in their life, despite available solutions. While that is certainly an option, if you're considering this route, you should know that more is at risk than low libido and lack of motivation.

As frustrating as those symptoms can be, living with low testosterone often results in more serious issues that risk the health of your vital organs. If you're on the fence about bringing your testosterone levels back within normal range, keep these health risks in mind.

Diabetes

Diabetes

For those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes, it's possible that low testosterone levels could be a factor. Research has shown that men with low testosterone are more likely to develop diabetes as they age, and those with diabetes are also more likely to have low testosterone. Additionally, men with low T may struggle with insulin resistance. While testosterone replacement therapy won't cure diabetes, studies have suggested that men with healthy testosterone levels tend to have better blood sugar levels and a lower risk of obesity.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

If a doctor has informed you that you have high blood pressure, you may be curious about its root cause. Could it be due to aging? Is it hereditary? Or is there another factor at play? Research has shown that men who have low levels of testosterone are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases. When testosterone levels are low, red blood cell production is hindered, which can speed up the accumulation of plaque in your arteries. Over time, this plaque buildup can result in severe issues such as heart attacks and strokes.

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Issues with Weight and Obesity

Many men face the challenge of excess body fat as they age, which can be discouraging when you're trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Despite eating well and exercising regularly, stubborn fat around the waistline can be difficult to get rid of. However, it's important to note that low testosterone levels may be the underlying cause. Studies have shown a correlation between low T and obesity, as testosterone helps regulate metabolism by controlling insulin, glucose, and fat. The good news is that undergoing TRT in combination with proper diet and exercise can lead to weight loss and improved blood glucose and low-density cholesterol levels.

Anemia

Anemia

Anemia occurs when the body lacks or has dysfunctional red blood cells, resulting in reduced oxygen supply to organs. Men with low testosterone levels are at a higher risk of anemia since testosterone plays a role in healthy red blood cell production. A study conducted in 2009 revealed that older men with low T have five times more chances of being anemic compared to men with normal testosterone levels. Although testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is not a cure for anemia, it can help in the production of more red blood cells, which may prevent anemia.

TRT in Kissimmee, FL: A Reliable Solution to Low Testosterone

head-bottom

To fully appreciate the advantages of testosterone replacement therapy from NV Medical Kissimmee, it's crucial to grasp its mechanism. Testosterone was first synthesized in a laboratory in 1935 and has been prescribed to counteract low testosterone levels in clinical settings ever since. Over the last few decades, it has emerged as one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the US.

TRT works by restoring a healthy testosterone level in men who suffer from low T. Essentially, TRT is similar to insulin for people who have diabetes. The body lacks sufficient production of an essential hormone, and so requires an exogenous source to replace it - testosterone in this case. Although most men begin TRT after the age of 50, more men in their 30s and 40s are having their testosterone levels tested at wellness clinics like NV Medical Kissimmee. If you're experiencing symptoms like ED but think you're too young for testosterone replacement therapy, it's worth having your T levels checked by a doctor.

Our TRT Process

As the name implies, TRT replaces the testosterone that your body is missing, so it can function as it should. Unlike some TRT clinics, however, our doctors and practitioners take a personalized, comprehensive approach to testosterone replacement therapy.

If you are experiencing symptoms that may indicate low testosterone levels, it is important to undergo a thorough evaluation, including a medical history and physical examination, as well as laboratory studies. After discussing the potential risks and benefits of testosterone therapy with your healthcare provider, a decision can be made about whether to proceed with treatment.

There are several methods for administering testosterone, such as a gel that is applied to the skin, injections, pellets that are placed under the skin, and a new oral pill that has recently become available. Once treatment begins, regular monitoring of your lab results is essential to ensure that the therapy is effective and to make any necessary adjustments based on additional factors. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and are interested in exploring testosterone therapy, please reach out to NV Medical Kissimmee to schedule a private and confidential consultation with our Board-Certified Urologist.

Lake Lily Park offers a serene, natural place to unwind while you dine. The park gets its name from the sparkling lake in the center, which is dotted with lily pads and teeming with turtles, fish, and ducks. A stunning gazebo is located on the premises, along with many picnic tables and benches throughout the park.

Couples can be regularly spotted having picnics at these benches, tables, or atop a blanket on the ground (there are many huge trees everywhere, so most of the area is shaded). There's also a lovely walking path that surrounds the lake, including a portion that is the oldest brick road in Florida.

A wonderful, fenced-in playground provides a spot to entertain the kids if you happen to have them along. And, it is located near a bike and walking trail that winds through most of Maitland.

Impress your date: After arriving at Lake Lily Park, use the crosswalk to cross the street so you can head to Antonio's Italian Restaurant which has a lovely Italian Market and Cafe downstairs. Browse the vast selection of gourmet nibbles, cheeses, veggies, and other accompaniments. The Cafe has a full menu, including fresh sandwiches made to order, which you can take to go. Don't forget dessert.

Then head back to Lake Lily Park and select one of the many tables or lay out a lush picnic blanket and gaze at the views.

But will residents support multi-family housing in single-family neighborhoods?

With only 850 acres of undeveloped land left, Kissimmee is shifting to redeveloping dilapidated buildings to sustain its steady growth and increasing the density of new developments, a controversial method experts say is the way of the future.

Most of the city’s empty acreage is already set to be a 3,000-plus-home subdivision, Hilliard Isle.

Kissimmee residents are feeling the pinch of the lack of land. Just behind the proposed Hilliard Isle subdivision sit the homes of families who are already dissatisfied with the cramped nature of the area and sad to see nearby fields of pasture and cows disappear.

With the effort to redevelop comes the hefty price tag of demolishing existing buildings, a cost the city is trying to absorb to entice developers.

“The city will pay for the demolition or at least a portion of the demo if the proposed development was something that would be really helpful to the city,” said Craig Holland, development services director.

The Kmart on West Vine Street serves as a prime example, Holland said. The city plans on converting the site of that abandoned store into something more useful but is still figuring out how to garner developers’ interest.

Its lack of open land puts Kissimmee at a disadvantage compared to St. Cloud and Osceola County, which both have an ample supply drawing steady demand from developers.

In order to compete, Kissimmee also should focus on saving developers time rather than just money by implementing policy changes to its planning and building codes, said Shlomo Angel, professor of city planning at The Marron Institute of Urban Management at New York University.

“I don’t think the money is important here,” Angel said. “What is important is the time it takes to get the permits, the time it takes to demolish because the thing that is discouraging developers from redeveloping is the uncertainty of how long it will take.”

Kissimmee is already changing its code to allow for quicker development at higher densities, Holland said.

“We try to make ourselves as attractive as possible to development with quick turnaround of developer permitting,” Holland said. “Our form-based code that we adopted a couple years ago really put a lot of flexibility into development standards.”

Now the city will have to start getting creative with how it accommodates development along with its growing population, Holland said.

In 2022 Kissimmee had over 80,000 residents, a figure that has steadily increased throughout the last decade, according to the latest data from the Census Bureau.

One method the city is using is to turn small parcels of vacant land sprinkled among neighborhoods of single-family homes into higher density living.

“We’ve actually had some of those narrow lots turned into duplexes which are stacked so the upstairs unit is one unit and the downstairs is another,” Holland said. “So people are getting creative and you see that in areas where because of the shortage, land is becoming more in demand and land prices are going up.”

Angel recommended the city aggressively pursue measures to get homes built on vacant land and residents living in empty homes. One way to do that is a vacancy tax, which forces landowners to pay when property is underused.

Around the world, cities are increasingly pressured to increase density as they grow but it’s important officials find a way to balance it all, Angel said.

“To increase the density, of course, it requires an agreement among the citizens and there’s usually a lot of pressure against it,” Angel said. “A lot of resistance to it is the NIMBY thing where they say great you can increase density but not here.”

Angel said the best way to gain acceptance for increased density among residents who prefer traditional single-family living is to redevelop commercial areas and reimagine suburban living.

“Along places that are more public and allowing multi-story housing along the avenues that are in more commercial areas is a way to increase density that might have the least resistance,” Angel said.

Another way to reduce backlash is to focus on redeveloping suburban areas by adding more shops that are walking distance from multifamily homes. That avoids further traffic congestion, something everyone can support, Angel said.

“They’re definitely going to go out of town to commute to work but you can create a lot of nice places where people gather, where people walk to…cafes, playgrounds and schools” Angel said. “There are many good examples of this like Celebration Florida where they tried to create higher density.”

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — It’s been a little more than a year since controversial new laws out of Tallahassee took effect and forced Central Florida school districts to take a closer look at the books in their schools.

HB1467 took effect in July of 2022 and HB 1069 was implemented just one year later.

Together the bills limited teachings on sexual orientation and gender identity. They also ban any book that depicts sexual conduct.

The governor signed the laws as part of a wave of legislation including the Parental Rights in Education Act and the ‘Stop WOKE act’.

As those laws were being written they were met with fierce opposition, and once signed they forced local school districts to make a number of policy changes.

Those changes included mandating school librarians to undergo new trainings to comply with the laws. Media specialist could face jailtime if pornographic material was found in their collections.

Now, some of the professionals trusted to decide what can and can’t be on school shelves are pursuing a different path.

In Osceola County, two former media specialist are doing that through a book store that opened this weekend.

Tania Galiñanes and Erin Decker spent part of Monday afternoon rearranging book shelves and placing orders for their Kissimmee book store White Rose Books and More.

The duo said the recent laws pushed them out of their former jobs as media specialist.

Galiñanes said that was a job she thought she would have through retirement.

“I was making sure our kids had books in their hands they could see themselves in books and that teachers were able to bring their students in. It was the most amazing job,” said Galiñanes.

But Galiñanes and Decker feel the laws changed and politicized their everyday duties.

“It’s just a lot. When people are accusing you of being a groomer. Or a pedophile or that you’re pushing porn on other kids. That takes a toll on your mental health especially when it’s not true,” said Galiñanes.

According to Osceola County Schools, 8 library media specialist have left the district since HB 1069 and HB1467 were implemented. The district currently has 48 media specialist and is hiring for the role.

“It used to be that you could not find a job as a library media specialist. And people would retire from these jobs,” said Galiñanes, “I know people who have left without having a Plan-B. They just can’t do it, they’re done.”

Decker said about 9 months ago she and Galiñanes started to think about alternatives and finally had the ‘aha moment’ to open a bookstore.

White Rose Books And More opened this weekend and will have a grand opening in November.

A big goal is making the shop a safe place to access all kinds of titles.

It includes a shelf for Spanish speakers meant to cater to Kissimmee’s prominent Hispanic population.

Another shelf is dedicated to books banned across the state, and in Central Florida.

“We want anybody to be able to gather here find books that they can see themselves in,” said Decker.

Channel 9 has asked all Central Florida School Districts to provide the number of media specialist who have left their jobs since the first of these laws were implemented.

Volusia County tells us 11 of their media specialists have left since July of 2022.

They currently have 68 media specialist district wide, we’re still waiting on the numbers from other counties.

Channel 9 also reached out to the governor’s office for comment but has not heard back yet.
